Day 285-287 Varadero to Havana
カリビアンブルーの海、白い砂、オールインクルーシブのリッチなホテルに泊まり、リゾートを満喫！
するはずだったのだけど…
2/26 Sun
6:30に出発する予定が、雨と腹痛で遅れて7時に。でもおかげで雨もあがり、道も平らで走りやすい。途中の街で市場をやっていた。いつもならいろいろ買うところだけど、これからオールインクルーシブ、つまりは食べ放題なのでぐっとガマン。
11時過ぎにバラデロに着き、ツアー会社でホテルを予約しようとする。だが日曜だからか、20箇所ぐらい聞いてもらったがどこも満室とのことでオールインクルーシブの夢は儚く散った。とてもかなしい。。お前にそんなセレブな真似は似合わない、だまってチャリでも漕いでろということなのでしょうか。
そんなわけでローカルなレストランでお昼を食べた。キューバではじめて行列を見たが、たしかにおいしい。とくに米がおいしかった。やればできるじゃないですか。キューバのお米。
ホテルにチェックイン。ビジネスホテルのような味気ないホテルだが、海が近いので歩いていく。
途中のカフェでピニャコラーダを作ってもらった。パインを丸ごと１個くり抜いて、その中にラム酒とパインリキュール、ココナッツリキュール、ココナッツミルク、そしてシナモンを入れる。見た目に興奮したのはもちろん、味もとってもおいしい。
そして海が…海が…めちゃくちゃきれい！！
海辺でピニャコラーダを飲み、海に入る。海がこんなにも気持ちいいのははじめてかもしれない。とにかくきれいすぎるし温度もちょうどよくて、いつまでも入っていたいぐらい。こんなにきれいな海があるのにホテルのプールに入るなんてもったいない。プールなんてなくてよかった！
2/27 Mon
朝日を見に行こうと思っていたのに、起きたら6時過ぎで慌てて出かける。昨日とは反対側の東側の海からのぼる朝日を見る。
ホテルで朝食を食べ、お金をおろしてからホテルに戻ろうとすると観光馬車のおじさんに連れて行かれる。市内を一周して2人で10CUCだというから高いなあと思いつつもせっかくだから乗ることにした。なぜか前におばさんも乗っていて、おばさんがでかくて前が見えない。ぐるりと一周まわり、支払いをしようとすると1人10CUCだと言われる。少しもめてポリスを呼ぶぞとか言われたが10CUCだけ払って立ち去った。
気を取り直して次の街マタンザスへ。
いちいち海がきれいで進まない。
謎の記念碑があったので宗谷岬を意識して撮ってみた。
今日はカサで夕飯を食べ、近くのバーでロイヤルモヒートという名のシャンペンモヒートを飲んだ。セレブでしょう。

今日はついていない日だ。マタンザスを出てからアップダウンが続く。1時間ぐらい走ったところで景色のきれいなところがあったので写真を撮り、しばらく走ってまた写真を撮ろうとしたところ、カメラがないことに気付く。さっきのところに落としたのだろうと思い、戻って探したが見つからず…。あーあ。前回（サンタバーバラで一眼レフをなくしたとき）と全く同じパターンですよ。まったく学習能力のないわたし。
カメラもだけど、サンティアゴ以降の写真が全てなくなってしまったのが悲しい。わたしのナイスなさとうきびショットとか、おじさんの巧みなニンニク編みショットとか、その他諸々。
やけ食いでサンドイッチとプリンを食べていたら、となりのお兄さんがジュースを奢ってくれた。
それからしばらく走っていたら、今度は下り坂でサングラスがふっ飛んでレンズに傷がついてしまった。これから大事に使おうと、つい2週間ぐらい前に奮発して買ったばかりなのに…。もうどうして悪いことって立て続けに起こるんだろう。
今日も太陽がジリジリと照りつけて暑い。汗が滝のように出る。時折見える海に癒される。
ヘミングウェイゆかりの地、コヒマルという港町に着いたのは14時頃。ジュースとスパゲティを食べる。相変わらずブヨブヨのスパゲティだ。キューバ人の辞書にはアルデンテという文字はないらしい。これはこれでおいしいけどね。
ヘミングウェイ行きつけのLa Terrazaというレストランで魚のフィレを頼んだ。かすみちゃんはパエリアを食べた。どちらもおしゃれな味だった。汗くさいチャリダーが来るようなお店ではないようだ。店内にはヘミングウェイとカストロの写真が飾られていた。
そこから15kmほどぐるりと湾をまわり、ようやくハバナに帰ってきた。都会だ。車が多い。人も多い。空気が汚い。でもなんだか懐かしい。
Day 282-284 Santa Clara to Varadero
2/23 Thu
次の街レメディウスまでは50km弱。
キューバのドライバーはチャリがノロノロ走っていてもあまりクラクションを鳴らしたりあおったりしない。それはきっと馬車やチャリタクシー（チャリよりも遅くてかつ幅もある）に慣れているからなのかもしれないと思った。
50km to the next town, Remedios.
I feel the drivers in Cuba are kind to the cyclists, maybe because they are used to the horse cars and bike taxis (which are slower and wider than the bikes).
途中でフルーツを売っているスタンドがあった。まんなかのフルータボンバという爆弾が気になる。
There was a fruit stand on the way. I wanted to try the fruta bomba, but I gave up because it was heavy.
朝からグアバジュース、ヨーグルト、グアバ、グアバジュース、ピザ、ソフトクリームと食べまくり。それでも100円ぐらいにおさまる素晴らしきモネダ飯。
Guava juice, yogurt, guava, guava juice, pizza, ice cream... This is what I had from the morning. But it is still less than a dollar.
レメディウスに1時過ぎに到着。ここからさらに60kmぐらい先にCayo Santa María という島の上にあるビーチがものすごーく美しいらしい。島だけど橋ではなく、海の上を道が通っている。どんなふうになっているのか興味が湧き、途中まで行くことにした。

We arrived in Remedios at 1pm, and headed to Cayo Santa Maria, where there is a beautiful beach. We actually didn`t go to the island, but went because we were curious to see the road (not a bridge) on the sea.

帰りにまたグアナポやさんを発見し、搾りたてのさとうきびジュースを飲んだ。昨日のよりも青臭さがなく、おいしすぎて2杯飲んだ。1杯1MN（5円）という衝撃の安さ。ちなみにさとうきびは汁が出なくなるまで何度も絞っていた。搾り終わったあとのさとうきびは全く甘みがないただの繊維の塊だった。
On the way back, there was a Guanapera again. This time the people were squeezing the juice pit from the sugar cane. Not as grassy as the one I had the day before. It was so good that I had two glasses.
夕飯は広場にあるレストランで、生演奏を聞きながら肉やハムが入った中華ぽいサラダとロブスターいりのパエリアを食べた。
We had dinner at the restaurant in the Plaza with live music.
夜はお兄さんに誘われてビールを飲んだ。なんでもキューバは昨年一年だけで10万人が国外逃亡したらしい。これは過去15年間よりも多いそう。しかし1月の法律でアメリカがキューバ人の入国を拒否したとかでもう出られない、ということを言っていた。社会主義国の限界が近づいているのかもしれない。
A guy I met at the plaza took me to have some beer. He said that 100 thousand people ran out of Cuba last year, and this is more than the sum of last 15 years. Many people want to get out of Cuba, but the law changed on January and no more people are alowed to enter the US.
さて、明日からバラデロというリゾート地に向かうまでのルートなのだが、地図を見るといくつか小さな村はありそうなものの、宿のおばちゃん曰く「食べるところも泊まるところもなにもない」らしい。すこぶる不安だ。
From tomorrow, we are going to take a minor route to Varadero. I can see some small villages on the map, but the lady in the hostel said there are no places to stay nor eat...
2/24 Fri
バラデロに気合を入れて7:30に出発したが、くつ下を忘れて宿に戻ったりはぐれたりしているうちにいつも通りの時間になった。
昨日のフルーツスタンドでまたグアバを買い、次の町で卵サンドを食べ、さらにそのあと見たことのない魚フライサンドを食べた。食べすぎですね。
We tried to leave early, but I forgot my socks in the hostel and ended up leaving as usual.
I had a guava, a egg sandwich, and a fried fish sandwich on the way.
魚フライの横にはライターを修理しているおじさんがいて感動した。
I was so amazed to see a man fixing a lighter.
今日の道は観光客が来ないようなところだからなのか、みんなとっても親切でフレンドリー。家の前でくつろいでいたおじいちゃんが両手を広げてbienvenidos!!と叫んでくれたのがなんだかすごくうれしかった。
The road today is hardly any tourists, and people are very friendly. When we came across a old man, he opened his arms and said "Bienvenidos!!". I was so happy.
あといろんなものをもらった。
さとうきびを刈っているおじさんを撮ろうとしたらさとうきびをもらった。トマトとピーマンももらった。ニンニクを三つ編みにしているおじさんたちの手さばきが見事で感心していたらニンニクをもらった。

Many people gave me lots of stuff.
I tried to take a pictures of a man harvesting sugar canes, and he gave me a sugar cane, some tomatoes and peppers. I was astonished to see the men weaving garlic, and the man gave me some garlic too.
キューバ人は揺れるのが好きだ。公園の遊具の7割はブランコだし、9割以上の家の前にロッキングチェアが置いてある。ここに至ってはブランコだった。
紙おむつって再利用できるのか…

サグアラグランデという街に着く。途中で寄ったシェーキやさんのお姉さんに尋ねたら宿の場所を教えてくれた。昨日の宿のおばさんがなにもないと言っていたけど、食べるところは星の数ほどあるし、宿もありました。
We arrived to Sagua la Grande. We were worried about our place to stay, but we were lucky to find It.
観光地でもなんでもないし、自転車じゃなかったら絶対に来なかっただろうけど、なかなか素敵な街。大きな川と教会もいくつかある。
It`s not a touristic town, and I think I would have ever came if I wasn`t traveling on my bike, but it is actually a neat town with a big river and several churches.
夕飯は宿の人に鶏の唐揚げだけお願いして、あとはもらった野菜でサラダと炒め物を作った。鶏は40分ぐらいかけて揚げていて、ほとんど中身がないぐらいカリッカリになっていた。
We asked the guy in the hostel for fried chicken, and we cooked the vegetables. The chicken was fried for about 40 minutes and it was the crispiest chicken I`ve ever had.
夜の街を散歩し、スタンドに寄ったらなぜかおじさんがジュースを奢ってくれた。キューバは好きかと聞かれたので好きだと答えると、微妙な顔をされた。おじさん曰く、政府のしめつけが厳しくて国民はみんな不満を抱えているそうだ。１日働いても200円とか。ジュースを奢ってもらって申し訳ない。
We were walking the town and found a stand. A man came and somehow bought me a glass of juice. He asked me if I like Cuba or not, and I said yes, but he said he doesn`t. People are unhappy about the goverment, because they only can earn 2 dollars a day. I felt bad that he bought me a drink.
2/25 Sat
明日の午前中にバラデロに着きたいので今日はなるべく近づきたい。朝ごはんを食べて、途中の町でピザを食べ、アイスを食べ、ヨーグルトを食べ、アフリカニータという甘いクッキーを食べ、シェーキを飲んだ。食べすぎですね。
We want to get as close as possible to Varadero. Breakfast, pizza, ice cream. a cookie called Africanita, and milk shake. Eating so much again.
食べてると必ずどこかから犬がやってくる。キューバの犬はかわいい。ペルーの犬に爪の垢を煎じて飲ましてやりたい。

Ready for the Chicken fight
104km走ったところでバキーンという嫌な音がして、案の定スポークが折れていた。目的地の町までは12kmあるしどうしようかと思った矢先、バースデーパーティーに遭遇し、中にいたおじさんに寄ってけと言われる。驚くことに1歳の誕生日なのにめちゃくちゃ盛大で、地図にも乗っていないような小さな村にも関わらず、どこから来たかは分からないが大量の人がいた。おそらく本人は憶えていない。
After 104km, I realized that my spoke broke again. I was wondering what to do because there is 12km more to the next town, when we saw a massive birthday party going on. We were invited to the party, and were surprised to see that it was for a 1 year old boy. There were so many people that I think it might be more than the population of the village.
食べ物や飲み物をいただき、そろそろ行こうかと立ち上がると、近くで友達が宿をやっているからそこに泊まればいいと言われる。予定より少し短いけど、スポークも折れてしまったことだし、せっかくなので泊めてもらうことにした。
The man gave us food and drinks, and said that his friend has a room so we can stay there. We were supposed to do more, but as my spoke broke, we decided to stay there.
宿に着くと他にも何人かお友達がいてわたしの自転車を見てくれ、挙句はホイールを持って別の友人のところまで直しに行ってくれた。なんという親切。
There were other friends when we arrived to the Casa, and they all helped me fixing my bike. At the end they took my wheel to another friends house. So nice.
夕飯もお願いした。サラダとビフテキとごはん。キューバでは豚や鶏はよく見るが、牛はあまり見ない。以前牛は神聖な生き物なので食べてはいけないと聞いたのだが、よくよく聞くと自分でと畜するのがダメなだけで、お店に出回っているお肉は政府所管の場所でと畜されたものなのでそれを買って食べる分にはいいらしい。イスラム教のハラルみたいなものなのかな。
We also ordered dinner. Beef stake with salad and rice. Most of the meat in Cuba is pork or chicken, and they dont eat much beef. I heard before that it is because a cow is a sacred animal, and I thought its prohibited to eat it, but actually its only prohibited to bucher it, and no problem if you buy it at the supermarket. I think it is something like Haral.
ごはんをみんなで食べるのは楽しかった。子供もかわいい。しかしごはんを食べ終えて談笑していたかと思いきや、突然夫婦ゲンカがはじまり、お礼も言えないままみんな帰ってしまった。わたしとかすみちゃんは訳も分からずポカーン。キューバ人は激しい…の意味がわかった。
It was fun having dinner together. But when we were talking after dinner, suddenly one of the couple started fighting, and everyone left without having time to say goodbye. We had no idea what was going on. Cubanos son muy caliente...
さーて…明日はいよいよリゾート地バラデロ！カリビアンブルーの海、白い砂、オールインクルーシブのリッチなホテル…ワクワクが止まらないッ！
Oh well... tomorrow by the way, we are going to the resort town Varadero! I can't wait to see the Caribean blue ocean, white sand and the All-inclusive hotel!!
Day 279-281 Trinidad to Santa Clara
2/20 Mon
朝トリニダーに着くと宿の人がプラカードを持って出迎えてくれた。荷物を置いてお散歩。
お腹が空いたので果物やさんでグアバを買い、フリタートというホットケーキの生地にネギやパプリカを混ぜて油で揚げたものを食べた。
We arrived to Trinidad, and left our stuff at the Casa and went for a walk.
I was hungry so I had guaba and a fritura, which is like a pancake dough mixed with onions and pepper and fried.
ここトリニダーはカラフルな街並みが有名で世界遺産になっている。石畳と相まってとても画になるかわいらしい街だ。クラシックカーは意外と少ない。
Trinidad is famous for the colorful houses, and it is UNESCO world heritage. It´s a very picturesque town, but not many classic cars.
トリニダー名物ファゴッティング。布からニッパーで一本一本糸を抜いて模様を浮き上がらせる。なかなか手間のかかる作業。
Fagotting is a special artwork in Trinidad, making a design by removing a string one by one from the cloth.
夜はバラコアのツアーで一緒だった韓国人の女の子に教えてもらったチャメロのカサでランゴスタを食べた。宿はいっぱいだったが運良く夕飯だけ食べさせてもらうことができた。韓国人に人気らしく、全員韓国人だった。
レストランみたいに丁寧なサービスで、カンチャンチャラというはちみつレモンみたいなお酒も作ってくれた。ランゴスタはトマト煮、グリル、フライの3種類。サラダとライスとスープ、デザートにアイスまで出してくれた。ジュースとモヒートも。そして味は噂通りとてもおいしい。チャメロもとっても優しくていい人。
We went to Chamero´s casa to have dinner. The Korean girl we met in the tour told us about here, and it is very popular among Koreans.
Chamero served us Canchanchara, a alcohol drink, and langosta in three different kinds--tomato, grilled, and fried-- served with rice, soup, salad, and ice cream. He also made great mojitos. He is a very friendly kind guy.
夜のトリニダーもまた美しい。
It´s beautiful at night too.
Casa de la Musicaはオープンエアーのステージ上で演奏がはじまった。ほとんど観光客だった。そのうちステージの前でちびっ子が踊りだした。けっして上手いわけでもないのだけど、誰の目を気にするでもなく、サルサとか関係なく自分の好きなように踊っている姿を見て、なんだか微笑ましく、うらやましくもあった。ちびっ子につられるようにして大人たちも踊り出す。
In Casa de la Musica, started a band on stage. So many tourists. One of the kids started dancing in front of the stage. He was actually not so good, but it was charming and also envious to see him dancing from his heart, no matter who is looking or what they think. The adults started to dance as well.
そのあとカンチャンチャラというお店に移動し、またカンチャンチャラを飲む。ここでも生演奏があり、こちらは小さいお店なので踊りやすい雰囲気。サルサを踊りたかったがバチャータが多かった。
Then we went to a bar “Canchanchara“ where we had canchanchara again. They also have live music here, and it was easier to dance because it was a small place and many people were dancing. I wanted to dance salsa, but it was mostly bachata.
さて、明日からようやくチャリ旅スタートでございます！
Tomorrow, we will start cycling at last!!
2/21 Tue
次の街シンフエゴスまでは80km。自転車に乗るのは久しぶりだけどなんだか軽い。それもそのはず、荷物を半分以上ハバナに置いてきたのだ。荷物が少ないとこんなにもラクなのか。そして坂道が少なくほぼ平ら。これならいくらでも走れそうな気がする、とか調子に乗ってみる。
80km to the next town, Cienfuegos. I haven´t biked for weeks, but it felt much easier. No wonder why, because I left most of my stuff in Havana. I didn´t know that biking with less luggage is much more easier. And it is almost flat as a pancake! I think I can bike forever.
人魚ならぬ人蛸
道中は馬と羊だらけ。バオバブの木もある。昔からなんとなくバオバブの木に憧れていたのでとてもテンションが上がる。
Many horses and sheep on the way. I also saw a baobab tree which I always have dreamed of to see.
道中カニが大量に死んでいた。5m置きぐらいにいた。状態がよければ今夜のおかずにしようかと思ったが、残念ながら異臭を放っていたので諦めた。それにしても海も川も遠いのにどこからやってきたのだろう。
There were so many dead crabs on the way. I considered taking it for dinner, but I gave up because it had a nice smell... I wonder where they came from, because there are no oceans or rivers near.
Organoponicoの看板につられて畑へ。レタス、トマト、ピーマン、ローズマリーなど20品目ほど作っていた。ピーマンと玉ねぎをもらった。アメリカとの国交が途絶えたキューバは石油資源に頼らない有機農業への道を歩むことになったという。その辺の実情を聞きたかったのだけど、わたしのスペイン語能力では困難でした。
Many organic farms on the way. I heard that Cuba started organic farming after they couldn´t import oil from other countries, and I wanted to hear the reality, which turned out to be difficult with my poor spanish.
シエンフエゴスから23km手前の小さな村のレストランで昼食を食べた。
We had lunch at a restaurant in a small village 23k before Cienfuegos.
シエンフエゴスには16時頃到着。
チョコレートソフトを食べている人たちがいて、うらやましげに見ていたら近くにいたおじさんがお店まで連れて行ってくれた。またもや3MNソフト。おいしい。そこのお店にいたOmarと仲良くなり、夜一緒にクラブに行くことになった。
We arrived at Cienfuegos around 4pm.
There were many people eating chocolate ice cream, and I was watching them enviously and a man took us to the shop. We became friends with Omar, who was at the shop, and decided to go to the club later.
昨日のカサのお友達のカサへ。どうやらカサネットワークができているようだ。今日のカサはなんとバルコニー付き。宿に荷物を置いて夕日を見に行く。
We stayed at the casa of a friend of the casa from yesterday. It seems like there is a big casa network. We left our stuff and walked to the sea to see the sunset.
夕飯を食べてから仮眠を取るつもりが気付けば待ち合わせ時刻の21時10分前。慌てて出かけてOmarと合流し、彼の自転車タクシーの友人と一緒にクラブへ。おかげで念願の自転車タクシーに乗せてもらった。
We had dinner and tried to take a short nap, but woke up 10 minutes before the appointment with Omar. We sprang out and joined Omar and his friend, who is a bike taxi driver.
明日も早いし日付が変わる前には帰る予定だったが、そもそもクラブが空いたのが22時。ひとまずハバナクラブとコーラを買ってキューバリブレ（ラムコークのこと）を飲みながら話す。
いろいろ話していた中で興味深いのは、キューバはどんな小さな町にも教会があるのに、日本と同じく無宗教の人が多いということ。Omarも小さい頃は毎週教会に行っていたそうだが、神は自分の中にいるのだから、教会に行こうが行かまいが関係ないと言っていた。
23時にバンドの演奏が始まったが、まだ誰も踊らない。24時にバンドが終わり、ようやくダンスタイム。1時過ぎにおいとましてみんなで一緒に帰った。深夜なのに大音量で音楽をかけて、踊りながら笑いながら帰った。完全に大迷惑だし、日本なら通報されると思うけど、たのしかった。
We were planning to leave early because we have a lot to do tomorrow, but the club opened at 10pm. We talked as we drunk cuba libre.
One of the stories interesting to me was that many Cubans have no religion, as like in Japan. It surprised me because even the smallest town has a church. Omar said he used to go to the church every week when he was a kid, but he realized it doesn´t make difference whether to go or not because the god is inside yourself.
The music started at 11pm, but no one was dancing. It finished at 12AM, and finally the dance time began. We danced for a hour and went back. It was fun playing music and dancing as we drove back the bike taxi to our casa.
2/22 Wed
昨日は海とクラブにしか行ってないので、朝からお散歩。ここシエンフエゴスはフランスのコロニアル建築が有名らしい。よくわからんけど。たしかに今まで見てきた街となんだか違う、ような気がする。
Yesterday we only made it to the sea and the club, so we walked around the city. Cienfuegos is famous for there French colonial architecture.
みやげ物市を覗き、屋台でかき氷やサンドイッチを食べてから宿に戻り、10:30にサンタクララに向けて出発。
朝は晴れていたのに、だんだんと雲行きがあやしくなり、ついに本降りに。この時期は乾季だと聞いていたので、こんなに降られるとは思っていなかった。途中の村でピザとパインジュースを食べる。
We saw the artesans, had some snacks, and left at 10:30 to Santa Clara.
It was sunny in the morning, but it became cloudy and started pouring. I didn´t expect so much rain because I heard it is the dry season. We had some snacks on the way.
雨はひどいし道は狭くてデコボコ。そしてしばらく走っているとつるん！と派手にコケた。肩から落ちたようで、肩ひじひざが痛い。あとで見たら出血していた。
It was raining badly and the roads are so narrow and bumpy. I suddenly slipped on one of the bumps and fell down from my shoulder. Wooo, that hurted!
もうしばらく走っているとGuaraperaというサトウキビジュースのお店があったので飲んだ。ちょっと青臭いけどおいしい。わたしが転んでドロドロなのを見て、お店の人がフキンを貸してくれた。やさしい。。
We stopped at the Guarapera, to try sugar cane juice. The man was kind and gave me a towel because I was so muddy after I fell.
その先はあまりアップダウンはないが雨とケガで慎重に運転していた…はずなんだけど、サンタクララ6km手前でガラス片を踏んでパンク。そして直したつもりだったけどしばらく走ってたらまたもやパンク。もう踏んだり蹴ったり。今日はこういう日なんですね。何度か空気を入れてだましだまし行く作戦をしてみたが、どうやらだめそうなのでかすみちゃんに先に宿に行っててもらい、ちゃんとパンク修理をした。
There weren´t many hills but I was riding carefully because of the rain and my injure... but I stepped on a glass bit and had a flat, just 6km before the city. I fixed it, but had a flat again. I tried to pump up and keep on going, but it didn´t work so I asked my friend to wait for me at the casa and fixed it again.
宿に着くと、かすみちゃんはいなかった。どうやらわたしを探しに行ってくれたようですれ違い。しばらく探したが見つからず、仕方がないので宿の前で待っていると、隣のお店でバースデーパーティーをしていた集団に誘われ、一緒に飲もうと言われる。いや、もうすぐ日も暮れるし友達が心配だし、そんな気分じゃないから…と断ったけど、ビールや食べ物を勧められた腹ペコチャリダーはNOと言えず、かすみちゃんに申し訳ないなあ…と思いつつありがたくいただいた。
！！！めっちゃおいしい！特にシチューがおいしい。一杯いただいて、もう一度かすみちゃんを探しに行こうと角を曲がったところでバッタリ合流。このまま会えないかもしれないと思ったのでうれしかった。一緒にバースデーパーティーに再度合流してビールとシチューをたらふくいただき、近くの宿に到着。今日はよく寝られそう。
But when I arrived to the casa, my friend wasn´t there. She left to look for me. I also looked for her for a while, but decided to wait in front of the casa. There was a birthday party going on next door, and the asked me to join them. I told them that I can´t because I'm waiting for my friend, but I was so hungry that I eventually couldn´t say no. I felt guilty but the stew was absolutely delicious. I had some and decided to look for her again, and when I turned around the first corner, we met again. I felt so relieved. We joined the party again and had a great time. I guess I can sleep well tonight.

Day 277-278 Baracoa to Santiago de Cuba
2/18 Sat
久しぶりによく寝た。出発しようとしたら土砂降りで、しばらく雨宿りをしつつ、洞窟博物館に向かう。博物館は丘の上にあり、バラコアの町が一望できる。
We tried to leave when it started raining hard. We waited for the rain to get better, and headed to the cave museum. It's on the hill and you can see the whole town of Baracoa.
博物館は8時に開館すると書いてあったが、着いたら誰もおらず、カギがかかっている。
The museum supposed to be open at 8am, but it was still locked when we arrived at 8:30.
いつ帰ってくるかもわからないので諦めて町を散歩しがてら宿に戻る。
We gave up and walked around the city.
「カラルー」という郷土料理が食べられるお店へ。カラルーはココナッツミルクと野菜のスープなのだが、ココナッツというよりはただのおいしいトマトスープだった。
We went into a restaurant where you can have Calaru, a local dish. It said it was coconut soup but it tasted like a tomato soup. It was good though.
山道を猛スピードで走るタクシーに酔いつつも17時頃にサンティアゴに到着。昨日のカサのオーナー・サンドラが紹介してくれたカサへ。オーナーの2人はとても感じがよく、レモナーダで出迎えてくれた。こういう気遣いがとてもうれしい。
We took a taxi and arrived to Satiago. We stayed at Sandra´s (the casa owner of yesterday) friend´s casa. They were very nice and welcomed us with a fresh lemonade.
台所ではタマリンドという豆をむいていた。この甘酸っぱい豆を潰して水と砂糖を加えて濾し、ジュースを作るらしい。
In the kitchen, they were making juice from tamarindo.
腹ごしらえということでまずはCerveseriaに入り、メニューの一番上にあったマルタというものを頼んでみる。かすみちゃんはチャレンジャーなのでマルタに練乳が入ったものを頼んだ。このマルタ、見た目は黒ビールだが、ひたすら甘い。ノンアルコールビールだというが、あとで調べてみたら麦芽糖にポップを加えたもので、ビール酵母を加える前の状態のもの。ビールっぽい味を目指している日本のノンアルコールビールとは似ても似つかぬ味。わたしには甘すぎたが、甘党のかすみちゃんはたいそうお気に召していたようだった。
We went to a Cerveseria and ordered “Malta“. We didn´t know what it was, and my friend is a challenger so she ordered Malta con leche (with milk). Malta is a non alcoholic beer, but totally different from the ones in Japan. It is basically beer before you put the yeast and ferment it, so it is super sweet. It was too sweet for me, but my friend liked it.
サンティアゴはキューバ第二の街であり、キューバ音楽のメッカでもある。特にCasa de la Trovaは映画「ブエナビスタ・ソシアルパーク」のコンパイ・セグンドらを輩出した場所として有名。さすがは老舗。世界中から観光客が来ていた。音楽もダンスも最高に楽しく、その中でも一際輝いていたカップルが最後に一緒に踊ってくれた。そしてなんとサルサを教えているということで明日レッスンを受けることになった。楽しみだ！
Santiago is the second biggest city in Cuba, and is also famous for music. Casa de la Trova is a popular place where Conpai Segundo (from the movie “Buena vista social park“ used to play. The music and the dance was great, and one of the dancers danced with me. He said he was teaching salsa, and would give us a lesson tomorrow!!

サンティアゴの人たちはやたらフレンドリーだ。すれ違う度にチュッチュッと投げキスをしてくる。
街へ向かう途中でタマリンドジュースを発見！甘酸っぱくておいしい。
The people here are so friendly. Everytime we pass by someone, they throw us a kiss.
We found Tamarindo juice on the way, It was very tasty.
７月２６日革命博物館へ。ここはフィデルら革命軍が最初に襲撃した場所で、今も当時の弾痕が生々しく無数に残っている。この作戦は失敗に終わり、半分以上が犠牲になったが、これをきっかけに革命軍は勝利したので7月26日は今もキューバの革命記念日。街を歩けば至る所に26 de Julioが刻まれた革命軍の旗が見られ、マスコットキャラまでいる。
26 de Julio Revolution museum is the first place that Fidel and the gueliras attacked, and you can see there are still many bullets left in the wall. This command failed, and more than half of the soldiers died, but eventually led to the victory. July 26th is the Revolution day in Cuba, and there are many flags and even a character for it.
11時からサルサレッスン。基本から教えてもらう。basica, de li que no, en chufla, vuelta básica など。いずれも以前習ったことがあったが、完全に忘れていたのでありがたい。上手な人と踊ると自分も上手くなった気がして楽しい。あまりに楽しいので延長して1時間半レッスンをしてもらった。ちなみに先生のYasielはハバナに住んでいるらしく、後日ハバナでもレッスンを受けることになった。
The salsa lesson began at 11o´clock. We started from the basics. It is so fun to dance with people who are good at it, because they make you feel as you are a good dancer. Our teacher Yasiel actually lives in Havana, so we are going to take lessons in Havana too.
お腹が空いたので先生おすすめのレストランへ。ロブスターとエビがおいしいらしいので頼む。かすみちゃんはチャレンジャーなのでコーヒーバターソースというのを頼んだ。とてもおいしかった。
We went to the restaurant where they recomended. My friend is a chalenger so she ordered a lobster with coffee butter sauce, which actually turned out to be so delicious.
街をプラプラ歩いていたらまた客引きのおじさんに捕まり、うさんくさいと思いつつ中に入るとサンティアゴの街のミニチュアがあり、思いの外面白かった。
そして話はなぜかキューバの医療について。医療大国と言われるキューバの医療技術はすごいらしく、某国の首相や某有名俳優もお忍びでキューバに手術をしに来ているという。海外で起きた地震やハリケーンなどの災害時にもたくさんの医師を派遣し、多くの命を救ってきたそうだ。たしかにキューバの人たちは年の割に元気だ。ブエナビスタソシアルパークの中で90才のコンパイ・セグンドが5人目を作っていると言った時には思わず我が耳を疑ったが、実際に来てみて90代のおじいちゃんが現役で農作業をしているのを見て納得した。
We were walking around the town when a man came up and took us into this place with a minituar of the whole town of Santiago.
He somewhy started talking about the medical care in Cuba. Cuba is famous for its medical care and many prime ministers or famous actors come secretly to have a surgery here. Now I understand why the people here are so active in their age.
サンティアゴ、短い滞在だったが面白い街だった。
さて、夜行バスでトリニダーに向かう。外はベトベトするほど暑いのに、バスは冷蔵庫並みに寒い。凍死しませんように。
It was a short but very enjoyable visit to Santiago.
Now we are heading to Trinidad. The bus is so cold and I hope I don´t get frozen.

カカオ農園とターコイズブルーの海の町、バラコアへ。やたらとカカオに詳しくなる回です。

朝起きたら水の音がする。なにか漏れてるのかなあと思ったら土砂降りだった。昨日一緒になったメキシコに住んでいる日本人の男の子が、「この時期は絶対降らねーす。100パーセント」と言っていただけに笑った。
I woke up and found out it was raining. I didn't expect rain for this season.
雨が上がるのを待って6:30頃出発。まだ暗い。7時頃にカミオン乗り場に到着。昨日は全部で30CUCだったのが50CUCとふっかけられる。どうにか45までは値切ったけど、それ以下は下がらないので渋々承知した。それにしても雨が激しい。我々が出るときだけ止んでラッキーだった。1時間ほど待って8時前に出発。
We waited for the rain to stop and left at 6:30. Still dark. We talked to the camion driver but he wouldn't make it cheaper than 45Cuc.
カミオンはリクライニングこそないものの、そこそこ快適。時々休憩があり、ごはんを食べたり。お昼に立ち寄ったところでは揚げパン1MN、ピザ10MN（頼んでからドラム缶オーブンで焼いてくれる）、レモナーダ3MNを食べた。どれも美味しい。
Camion doesn't have a reclining seat, but it was comfortable than I expected. There were break times which stopped at small towns and we could have some snacks such as a sandwich, pizza and a lemonade.
12時間で着くと言っていたが、サンティアゴに21時頃着く。しかしこのままグアンタナモ（サンティアゴとバラコアの間の町）というところまで行くというのでそのまま乗ることにした。グアンタナモに22:30に到着。バラコア行きのバスが3:30に来るというので、そのままターミナルで待つことにした。親切なタクシードライバーのおっちゃん2人がいろいろ教えてくれる。お腹が空いたのでごはんを食べながら話しているうちに話が盛り上がって、ディスコに行って踊ろうということになった。とても眠かったけど、せっかくなので連れて行ってもらった。はじめてクラシックカーに乗った。中が意外と広くて快適。
We arrived to Guantanamo (a town between Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa) at 10:30pm. A taxi driver told us there is a bus to Baracoa that arrives at 3:30am, so we decided to stay at the bus terminal.
町は閑散としていたのに、ディスコのなかは町中の人が集まっているのではないかという混みっぷり。クラブっぽいけど奥の方では踊っている人もいてさすがキューバ。腰の動きがすごい。みんな生まれ持ったものなんだろうな。
少し踊って2:30にターミナルに戻った。どうやらおっちゃんの1人に気に入られたようで、このままバラコアまで連れて行ってくれるという。ありがたいけど、ひざまくらとかされてちょっと困ったので丁重にお断りして3:30のバスに乗った。わたしはどうやらおじさんキラーらしい。
The town was so quiet, but the disco was so packed that I thought every young person in the city had been there.
It looked like a club, but there were some people dancing salsa in the corner.
We also danced a bit, and went back to the bus terminal at 2:30am. One of the taxi driver seem to like me, and offered us to take us to Baracoa, but we took the 3:30am bus.

バスは7時前にバラコアに着いた。リクライニングシートが快適で爆睡した。降りた瞬間に大量の客引きがやってきて、オレのカサに泊まれ、わたしのが一番だ、と主張してくる。
「うるさーい！！」と叫んだら、みんな散り散りに去って行ったけど、ひとりのおばさんだけしつこく自転車でついてきた。
結局客引きのところではなく、たまたまたどり着いた一軒目のカサが感じが良いしきれいなので、少し割引してもらって決めた。
The bus arrived at 7am. I slept very well in the reclining seat. As soon as we got off, many casa runners came up to us and said, "Come to my casa!!" "No, my Casa is the best!!"
They were so noisy that I shouted and most of them ran away, except one woman who kept on following us.
We found a nice casa with a nice owner.
セントロにあるcubaturというツアー会社に行くと、カカオ農園と絶景ポイントを周るツアーがあったので申し込む。
We signed up for a tour to visit the cacao farms and scenic spots.
まずはカカオ農園へ。キューバの中でもカカオを生産しているのはここバラコアだけで、チョコレート工場も国に１つしかない。つまりキューバで出回っているチョコレートはすべてバラコア産。ここは国内最大のカカオ農園だったが、昨年10月に大きなサイクロンがあったらしく、壊滅的な被害を受けていた。ガイドのカルロスが説明してくれる。
First, we went to a Cacao farm. Baracoa is the only place in Cuba which produces cacao, and there is only one chocolate factory in the whole country. That means all the chocolate in Cuba is made here. This farm used to be the biggest farm, but was destroyed by the cyclon which attacked last October, so there were very few trees left. Our guide taught us a lot about Cacao.
・カカオには赤、緑、茶の３種類があり、熟すと何れも黄〜オレンジ色になる。ここでは3種類を混ぜて収穫している。
There are three kinds of cacao beans (red, green and brown), and they all get yellow to orangish when it gets ripe. Here they harvest the three kinds mixed together.
・一本の木は年間に3000もの花（小さくて黄色い花）をつけるが、特別なハエかアリによってしか受粉しないため、そのうち結実するのはわずか80個。年間2回シーズンがあるので、1回あたり40個。
Each tree blooms 3000 flowers (tiny and yellow) every year, but they only pollinate by a specific ant or fly, so only 80 fruits per year. The season comes twice a year, which means only 40 fruits in one season.
・カカオは一般的には年に2回シーズンがあるが、ここバラコアは一年中同じような気候で雨季と乾季の違いが曖昧（一年中雨が降る、キューバの他の地域の3倍）なので、⚪︎月がシーズンというより5ヶ月半に一度シーズンがくる。したがって毎年1ヶ月ずつずれる。ちなみに今はシーズンじゃないので実も花もほとんどなかった。
The season for cacao generally comes twice a year, but here in Baracoa, where they have barely no seasons and lots of rain (three times more rain then the rest of the country), the season comes every five and a half months. That means the season becomes one month earlier every year, so you can't say like May is the season for cacao. It wasn't the season when we came so it was hard to find a flower or a fruit.
・カカオの実は幹や枝から直接生え、そのままでは落ちないのでナイフで切り落として収穫するが、収穫しないとそのまま樹上に残って干からびる。
Cacao beans grow directly from the trunk or branch, and it doesn't drop on its own so you harvest it with a machete or otherwise it will remain on the tree and dry out.
・他にもコーヒー、バナナ、ヤシ（デーツ、ココナッツ）、アカシアの木が植わっていた。カカオやコーヒーはいずれも日陰を好むので、バナナ、ヤシ、アカシアがその日陰を提供している。
They also grow coffee, banana palm (coco and dates), and acacia. Cacao and coffee likes the shade, and the bananas and palms provide it.
・デーツと言ってもキューバには食用デーツはなく、ブタの餌になる。
The dates are for pigs. There are no edible dates in Cuba.
そのあとカカオ＆コーヒー農家さんのお家でチョコレートになるまでの工程を見学。
Then we went to the cacao and coffee farmer's house to see the process of making chocolate.
収穫したカカオを割ると、中から白い果肉に包まれたタネが出てくる。果肉は甘酸っぱくてライチのようだった。タネを噛むとムラサキ色。果肉とタネを一緒に発酵させる。発酵する過程で果肉は液化してなくなるのだが、この液体を集めて作られるのがカカオリキュール。そして発酵したタネを乾燥させ、焙煎してから挽く。使うのはコーヒーミルと同様の機械。
When you open the cacao bean, the white fruit shows up. The fruit is sweet and sour, tastes like lychee. If you bite the seed, you can see that it's purple. They ferment the seed with the fruit for a month. The fruit turns into a liquid, and cacao liquor is made from this.
コーヒーの場合は油分が0.1%しかないため、挽くと粉状になるが、カカオは54%が油分なので挽くとペースト状になる。このペーストに、工場ではなんちゃらプレスという機械を当てることで油分を揮発させて分離するが、ここにはそのような機械はないので、ペーストにお湯を加えて72時間放置すると油分と分離させられるそう。（お湯は蒸発する）
この油分がカカオバターで、化粧品にも使われる。傷跡にも効くという。残ったのがカカオマス。現地の人はこのカカオマスをお湯かミルクで溶いて砂糖を加えて飲む。砂糖なしのココアをはじめて飲んだ。ハチミツで作られたチョコレートもおいしかった。チョコレートはカカオマスにカカオバター、ミルク、砂糖などを加えて作られる。カカオバターにミルクと砂糖を加えたのがホワイトチョコ。殻は肥料にする。
なんて無駄がないんだ、カカオ。
Coffee contains only 0.1% of oil, so it becomes powder when you grate it, but cacao, which contains 54% oil, turns into a paste. In the factories they use a special machine to extract the oil, but here they don't have a machine so they put hot water and leave it for three days so the oil comes on top. (The water dries out)
This oil is called cacao butter and it's often used in cosmetics. The remain is cacao mass. The local people add some water or milk and sugar to the cacao mass and drink it. It was the first time for me to try cocoa without sugar. The handmade chocolate with honey was also good. They add cacao butter, milk and sugar to make chocolate. White chocolate is made from cacao butter, milk and sugar. They use the shell of the cacao fruit for fertilizers. Nothing to waste.
カカオ農園の次は絶景ポイントを通りつつ、Mataという村へ。ここは人口400人にも満たない小さな村だが、キューバではどんなに小さな村でも必ず3つのもの--小学校と教会と診療所があるそうだ。さすが医療＆教育大国。
Then we went on beautiful viewpoints and down to a small village, Mata. There are only 400 people living here, but in Cuba every single village has three things-- a church, a clinic, and a primary school.
Boca de Yumuriという川と海が入り混じる河口へ。このYumuriの地名には悲しい歴史があるという。スペイン人がやってきてこの土地に金を見つけ、先住民たちに採掘させていたのだが、そんなことをするぐらいなら死んだほうがマシだ。Yo mori と言って崖から川に飛び降りて自殺する人があとを絶たなかったという。そんな悲しい歴史とは裏腹に川は美しい。ガイドに促されるがままにそのまま川遊び。水が冷たくて気持ちがいい。本物のココナッツウォーターも飲んだ。
We went to Boca de Yumuri (mouth of Yumuri) where the river and ocean meets. The name Yumuri has a sad story. When the Spanish came and found gold in this place, they forced the indeginous people to dig it, but the indeginous people said they would rather die "yo muri" than doing that, and many people jumped off the cliff into the river. The river is so beautiful however that it's hard to imagine they had such a sad story. We bathed in the rivers and had coconut water from a real coconut.
それからはビーチの目の前のレストランへ。ココナッツソースのものがおすすめということで、ランゴスタ（ロブスター）を頼んだら3匹も出てきてびっくり。レストランにいたお兄さんにサルサレッスンもしてもらった。絵に描いたような南国っぷり。いやー楽園ですな、キューバ！
Then we went to a restaurant in front of the beach. I ordered a lobster, and was surprised to have three!! The guy in the restaurant taught me salsa. What a paradise!!

朝食込みで20CUCのところを18CUCにまけてもらった。朝ごはんがとてもおいしかった。特にショコラテ。サンドラはとても優しくて親切。
20CUC for 2 people including breakfast, but I negotiated down to 18. The breakfast was great, especially the hot chocolate. Sandra is very nice and helpful.
Day 273-274 La Havana
3週間のキューバの旅が終わった。音楽とお酒と踊りに溢れていて、馬車とクラシックカーがそこら中を走っていて、熱い国だった。キューバにいる間はなかなかネットができなかったのでこれから少しずつ振り返っていこうと思う。

ついに常夏の国キューバへ！
今日から3週間は先輩女チャリダー・かすみちゃんと二人旅。かすみちゃんは5年前にひとりでアフリカを走っていて、わたしが今回旅に出る前にいろいろ相談に乗ってもらったり、パニアバッグを譲ってもらったりしていた。そしてこれからまたアフリカを走りに行くのだが、その前にキューバを一緒に走ろうということになった。
Cuba!!
I'm going to bike with my friend Kasumi. She went to Africa by herself five years ago, and gave me advice before I left Japan. After Cuba, she is going to Africa again so I asked her to go Cuba together.
入国審査は殊の外スムーズに終わり、無事に空港で合流。
自転車がなかなか出てこなくて、トラックから荷物を降ろしてる人も、その前に立っているおばさんもやる気がなく、なぜか我々と他のお客さんの方が一生懸命荷物を運んでいた。これが社会主義ってやつか、といきなり洗礼を受けた気がした。
We met at the airport, and waited for a long time for the bike. There was a truck loaded with packets, but the guy unloading and the woman checking were very reluctant. The passengers who were waiting for the packets were working harder than anyone else.
両替所には長蛇の列ができていたが、その隣のATMは誰も並んでおらず、カードが吸い込まれて出てこなくなるとかいろいろ聞いていたけどすんなり下ろせた。（かすみちゃんが）
There was a long line in front of the money exchange, but no one in front of the ATM. I didn't hear good things about ATMs in Cuba, but it seemed to work fine.
空港からハバナ市街までは20km弱だが、カサに自転車の箱を預けたいのでタクシーで行くことにした。大きいタクシーなので2人で30CUC。

カサデヨハンナ（ヨハンナさんの家）に到着。ここはほぼ韓国人と日本人しかいない。過去の旅人たちが残していった「情報ノート」がある。ドミトリーは10CUC、1階のベッドはなんと5CUC。いずれも朝食付き。
We arrived to Casa de Johanna. Almost only Korean and Japanese here. The dorm is 10cuc, and the sofa on the first floor is only 5cuc, both breakfast included.
荷物を置いてからまちを散歩。
おいしそうなパンがあったけど、大きいお金しかなくて買えなかった。
そう、ここキューバは二重通貨制という特殊なシステムで、観光客が使うCUC（クック）とキューバ人の使うMN（モネダ、CUPともいう）がある。1CUC（約100円）＝25MN。キューバ人の月収は2-3000円なので、観光客との格差を埋めるための仕組みらしい。宿代や入場料、ツアーなどはCUCを使うが、パンやピザなどの軽食は観光客でもモネダ払い、つまりキューバ人と同じ価格で買うことができる。（モネダ飯については後日詳しく書こうと思う。）
We went to the town and found a nice looking bread, but we couldn't buy it because we only had CUC. Here in Cuba, there is a double currency system to solve the gap of income between local people and the foreigners.
1CUC (about 1dollar) is 25MN.
All the accommodation and the tours need to be payed by CUC, but local food such as bread or pizza, can be payed by MN.
我々はCUCしか持っていなかったので、お金があってもものが買えないという悲しい状況であったが、そのあと入った小さな食堂でお金を崩してもらって無事に食事にありつけた。
キューバの食事はメイン（肉や魚）＋コングリ（豆が入った赤飯みたいな見た目のご飯）にサラダとバナナかサツマイモのチップスがつくのが一般的。
We finally found a local restaurant which accepted CUC, and we were able to have the typical Cuban dish.
Meat or Fish with Congri (rice with beans) , salad, and banana or sweet potato chips.
海岸沿いを歩いているといろんな人が話しかけてくる。しばらく話していたおじさんはポリスに連行されていった。よくわからないけど、観光客と仲良くしてはいけないとかなんとか。
We were walking along the beach when a guy came to talk to us. We were talking for a while but than a policeman came and took him. There seems like there is a rule that the locals can't be friends with tourists.

ここに来るまでほぼなんの計画も立てていなかったので、大まかなルートと計画を立てた。
まずはここから東へ1000kmほどにあるキューバ第二の都市、サンティアゴ・デ・クーバとその近くのバラコアを観光し、そこからトリニダーまで移動し、トリニダーからビニャーレスは自転車で走ろうということになった。
We hadn't made any plans until we met, so we decided our route. We will go to Santiago de Cuba, which is 1000km east from Havana and is the second biggest city in Cuba. Then we take a bus to Trinidad, and bike from there to Viñales.
そこでサンティアゴまでの足なのだが、昨日情報ノートを読み込んだ結果、観光客向けのお高いバス以外に、地元民が使う「カミオン」という家畜トラックみたいなものがあるらしい。そんなわけで情報収集のためにカミオン乗り場へ。そこまではローカルバスに乗っていった。ローカルバスは素人にはとっても分かりづらいのだが、0.4MN（約2円）という信じられない値段。
I found out there is also a "camion", a truck for locals besides the expensive tourist bus, so we went to the camion terminal to find out if we can get on. We took a bus to go to the terminal. It's only 0.4MN, which is like few cents.
どうやらカミオンには予約とかはなく、いっぱいになったら出発する仕組みらしい。値段もドライバーによってマチマチ。家畜トラックと聞いていたのでどんなものかと思ったら、中にはちゃんと座席もあって意外と快適そうだし、自転車も積めそう。この日のドライバーのおじさんは自転車込みで1人15CUCでいいよと言ってくれたが（ちなみにバスだと51CUC＋自転車5CUC）、まだ自転車を組み立てたり荷物を整理したりしないといけないので、明日の朝出発することにした。
It seems like there isn't any reservation systems for camions, and it leaves when it gets full. The price also depends on the driver. The driver that day told us 15cuc each including the bike, but we couldn't leave because we weren't ready.
市街に戻ろうとバスを待ったがなかなか来ないので歩いていたところ、バイクタクシーに捕まる。はじめてサイドカーに乗った。
We went back to the center with a bike taxi. First time to ride a sidecar.
お昼ご飯は日本食レストランに行ったがとても残念な味だった。
We went to a Japanese restaurant for lunch, but it was very disappointing.
そしてヘミングウェイ行きつけのFloriditaというバーへ行き、フローズンダイキリを飲む。
Than we went to Floridita, Hemingway's favorite bar, to have frozen daiquiri.

ハバナのまちを散歩
自転車を組み立てて荷物の整理をしてから、ちょうどFeria de libroという大きな本のお祭りをやっているというので、夕方にわざわざタクシーで行ってみたのだが、すでに本は終了していて食べ物しかなかった。
There was a big book festival "feria de libro", but by the time we arrived, there were no more books and only food.
夜はサルサバーへ。日本を出る前に少しサルサを習っていたのだけど、もうすっかり忘れていた。キューバにいる間に少しでも踊る機会があるといいなあ。
We went to the Salsa bar. I was learning a bit of Salsa before I left Japan, but forgot everything during my travel. I hope I have some chances to dance while I'm here.
明日はカミオンでサンティアゴデクーバに向かう。無事に乗れますように！
We're taking a camion to Santiago de Cuba tomorrow. I hope it works out!!
Day 269-272 Santiago

夜行バスでサンティアゴに戻ってきた。3ヶ月ぶり。同じチリとはいえ、パタゴニアとサンティアゴは北海道と九州ぐらい離れているので、こちらは夏真っ盛りで暑い。2週間前までは40℃近くあったとか。
Back to Santiago de Chile. Even though it's the same country, Santiago is 1000km north of Patagonia, so it's real summer.
11月にもお世話になったMariamとJulioのおうちに今回も泊めてもらった。しかし彼女らはこれからちょうど友達と旅行に出かけるというので今回はお留守番する形になった。
Mariam and Julio let me stay at their house again, although they were going out with their friends for a vacation.
わたしは2/13にサンティアゴからキューバに飛ぶのだが、なんでもキューバには自転車のパーツはほとんどないと聞くし、ネットもほとんどできないらしいので念入りに準備しないといけない。
I'm going to fly to Cuba on the 13th of February, and I hear it's very difficult to find stuff nor internet connection there, so I have to get well prepared while in here.
と思いつつ、なんかやる気がしなくて映画見たりネットしたりだらだらしているうちに１日が終わってしまった。そして今日が金曜日だったと気付いたのは夜になってからだった。
しまった。。土曜の午後から日曜にかけてはほとんどの店が閉まっている。後悔しても後の祭り。明日は朝から動かないと。
But you know, I'm a lazy person, I ended up spending the whole day watching movies and surfing through the Internet, and when I realized it was Friday today, it was too late. Oh no, many stores are closed on weekends...
2/11 Sat
と思っていたのだけど、翌日は結局昼になってしまった。
サンティアゴには自転車屋さんがたくさんある。特にSan Diego通り沿いの数ブロックは20軒近い自転車屋さんが軒を並べている。とりあえず飛行機に積むための自転車ダンボールを探す。何軒か回ってどうにか死守。ゴミ箱になってて中にリンゴとかティッシュとか入ってたけど。
In Santiago, there is a street with many bike shops. I went there to look for a bike box, and managed to get one although it was full of garbage.
そのあと前回もお世話になったまりえさんちへ。2人でワインを飲みながらいろいろ話した。そして夕飯にはなんとカツカレーをご馳走になった。カツカレーなんて旅に出てからはじめて食べましたよ。感動。おいしすぎて3杯ぐらい食べた。いつも本当にありがとうございます。
I met Marie and her lovely family again. She made me Katsu-curry, curry rice with fried pork. It was so good I had three bowls.
夜はエネイダとラファと合流。2人も一年の旅を終えてあと数日でコロンビアへ帰る。旅の思い出をいろいろと振り返っていた。帰ってから何をするかはまだ決めていないという。
At night, I met Eneida and Rafa. They will go back to Colombia in few days. We were talking about our memories and what to do after we go back to our normal life.

キューバに向けて久々にショッピングなぞをする。あまりに久しぶり過ぎてほとんど何も買えず、迷いに迷ってTシャツとサングラスだけ買った。今日は日曜なので自転車屋さんも空いてないし、明日の午前中にかけるしかない。
I went shopping for Cuba, but I haven't done something like this for a long time. I got a T-shirt and sunglasses.
All the bike shops are closed today, so I have lots of stuff left to do tomorrow.
2/13 Mon
近くの自転車さんに行く途中にスポークが折れていることに気づく。いつの間に。。自分で交換しようかとも思ったが、時間がないのでプロに任せたいところ。しかしここの自転車やさんのメカニックは夏休みでいないので他のところを紹介される。だが紹介された先も夏休み。仕方ないので少し離れたところにある自転車さんに行くため、ホイールだけ持ってバスに乗る。そして戻ってきてからタイヤとチューブを交換。これだけで夕方になってしまった。
On the way to the bike shop, I found out my spoke was broken again. I thought of doing it myself, but there is not enough time. The mechanic at the closest bike shop was on vacation, so I took a bus with my wheel to go to another one. Than I renewed my tire and inner tube.
空港まで行く方法を検討するのが面倒なので、ダンボールをもって走っていこうかと思っていたところ、MariamとJulioがなんと送ってくれた。旅行から帰ってきてお疲れのところ、何から何まで本当にありがとうございます。
いざ、キューバへ！！
I thought of biking to the airport, but Mariam and Julio offered me a ride. They should have been tired after a long drive, but they are so nice. Thank you so much!!
Now I'm ready to Cuba!!
Day 266-268 Pucon
プコンの街から8kmほど離れた小高い丘の上にダニエラの家はあった。わたしが到着した時は真っ暗だったので、より一層光り輝いて見えた。
今日から数日間ここでナチュラルビルディング（自然素材の家づくり）を学ぶ。
Daniela's house stands on a hill 8km out of Pucon. I'm going to learn natural building here for few days.
家主のダニエラは建築家で、約一年前からこの家を建て始めた。それ以前にもサンティアゴの近くにナチュラルビルディングの建物をいくつか建てて来たという。
Daniela is an architect , and has started building this house one year ago.
ロシア人のカップルと3人で作業をした。
壁は全てわらに泥をまぶしたlight straw clayというものを隙間なく詰めることで断熱している。厚さは日当たりのよい北側は約15cm、南側は約30cm。１日目はひたすらこのlight straw clayを作って詰めた。
I worked with a Russian couple. I packed light straw clay (straw mixed with mud) into the walls for the insulation. It's necessary to pack it as much as possible in order to get a better insulation. 15cm on the north side, which has lots of sun light, and 30cm on the south side.
2日目は母屋の屋根の補修と屋上用の土を掘るおしごとでした。
屋根の一番下の層にはビニールが敷いてあるのだが、その上に乗せた土の重みでビニールがずり下がってしまったため、一度上の土を全てどけてからビニールを足し、その上にさらに土を乗せる。
庭の一部を掘り返すのだが、ルートマットができていて掘るのが楽しかった。
The second day I dug a root mat from the garden and laid it on the roof of the main building for the roof garden.
それが終わった後はコンポストの修繕。子供たちが手伝ってくれた。母の背中を見て育っているだけあって、カナヅチ使いが巧みだった。
After that, I fixed the compost bin. The kids helped me. They are very good carpenters because they've always looking at their mother.
3日目はまた土を掘り、今度は倉庫の屋根に乗せるおしごとでした。土の入った重たいバケツを持って不安定なハシゴを登るのはハラハラした。
The next day we dug the earth and put it on another roof. It was pretty hard work going up the ladder with a heavy bucket.
ちなみにこの土を掘ったところはこれから池にするそう。ポールさんとこのみさんのところみたいになるのかな。
The place where we dug the soil will turn into a pond.
お昼休みにはみんなでカブーというカードゲームをした。手持ちの4枚をできるだけ少ない数にするゲーム。なかなかおもしろい。
At break time, we often played a card game called "Kaboo". You need to make the number of your four cards as small as possible.
ブラックベリーか大量に実っていたのでアランを誘って摘みに行った。一緒に自転車に乗ったりもした。彼はとても優しくて賢い少年だ。
Me and Alan went to pick some blackberries, and also rode bikes together. He is very sweet and smart.
最後の日には湖のビーチに連れて行ってもらった。
The last day Daniela took us to the lake. So beautiful.
ご飯もおいしく、あっという間の3泊4日だった。もっとゆっくりできたらよかったな。
これから家がどのようになっていくのか楽しみ。
The food was great, and four days passed by quickly. I wish I could have stayed longer.
I'm curious how this house gets into shape.

Day 261-265 Bariloche to Pucon
2/2 Thu
バリローチェまで90km。登りが多いが、途中で湖が見えてくると漕ぐ足にも力が入る。
90km to Bariloche!!
お昼を食べたスポットが最高だった。なんて色だ。
街の手前から一気に交通量が多くなってこわい。どうにか街にたどり着いたが、目当てのビールのお店はまだ開いていないので、カフェへ。
そしてビールがうまい。1700km北上してきたので暑い。夏や。And the beer is so good. It's hot here. Summer time!!
本当は10km先のキャンプ場に泊まる予定だったのだが、ビールを飲んだら完全に移動する気をなくしたので隣のホステルへ。350ペソと高いがバリローチェはどこも高いらしいので仕方ない。
I was planning to go to the campsite 10km out of town, but I was too lazy after the beer, and ended up at the hostel next door.
なんだか肉の気分だったのでスーパーで肉とワインを買う。ザ・アルゼンチン。

早く出る予定だったが、起きたら雨でやる気をなくした。昼前に雨が上がったので意を決して出発。
It was raining in the morning so I left at noon.
街を出てすぐにへんな道に迷い込み、さらに湖の周りをぐるっとまわって西向きになった途端すさまじい向かい風と登りのコラボでなかなかスピードが出ない。
After turning around the corner of the lake and heading west, I had a bad headwind.
そんなわけで今日はあまり進まず、次の村の15km手前で野宿。夕焼けに染まる湖が美しい。
I couldn't do much today, I ended up wild camping close to the lake. Beautiful sunset.
ごはんを作って食べてたらブラジル人カップルがやってきた。なんと竹バイク！！
A Brazilian couple came with an awesome bike!!
Handmade bamboo bike!! Awesome!!
2人は3年間旅をしてからブラジルにパーマカルチャーコミュニティを作るそうだ。自作の竹バイクも売るという。興味の対象が似ていて、夜遅くまで話が盛り上がった。わたしは夕飯を食べたのにさらに夕飯をもらった。食べ物にnoと言えないわたし。
They said they are going to build a permaculture community in Brazil, after their three years travel. It was very fun to talk and share our experiences because we had same interests.

今日は風もなく穏やかな１日。相変わらずアップダウンは多いけど。
Nice weather with no wind!!
昼前にラアンゴストゥーラという村に着く。ここからロスアンデスまでの116kmは「シエテラゴス」という７つの湖を通るルート。ここもアウストラル街道なみのチャリダー率。ベルギー人、ブエノスから来たカップル、ブエノス3人組、そしてコルドバ3人組などに会った。
I arrived to Villa La Angostura before noon. So many cyclists on this Siete Lagos route.
湖とか山とか次から次へと出てきて忙しい。
そしてコルドバ3人組と同じキャンプ場に到着。湖の側でとてもきれいなのだが、フリーかつ土曜だからかとても混んでいて、湖の前のいいスポットは全て埋まっていた。
I camped by the lake with a group from Córdoba. It was a nice place but very crowded.
釣りをしようと思っていたが、ごはんを食べてるうちに暗くなってしまった。
そのあと謎の撮影タイムがはじまったが、これがなかなか楽しくて、面白い写真を撮ってもらった。
At night, we enjoyed taking pictures like this.
明日は早起きして釣りする！

朝少しだけ釣りをしたけどだめだった。むずかしいぜ。
コルドバ3人組はゆっくり進むのでわたしはひと足お先に出発。
I did some fishing but I couldn't get anything.

そしてまた湖。シエテラゴスのルートはツアーバスも走っていて、いろんな人に一緒に写真を撮ってくれと言われてまんざらでもないわたし。
Many lakes. There are also tour buses running in this route, and many people asked me to take pictures together.
一度調子に乗ってたら「あなたじゃなくてあなたの自転車と（わたしの）妹を撮らせて」と言われたけど。
今日だけで20人ぐらいのチャリダーに会った。このシエテラゴスのルートは短いし舗装路だし、だけど美しいのでアウストラル街道よりもだいぶお手軽にパタゴニアを楽しめると思う。わたしの残念なタイヤは未舗装路になるとパンク祭りになるので、いくら美しかろうがなんだろうが景色を愉しむ余裕なんてないんですもの。
I think this is a nice path to cycle Patagonia. It's much more shorter and easier than the Carretera Austral because it's paved. I just can't enjoy gravel with these shitty tires, no matter how beautiful it is.
1時過ぎにロスアンデスに到着。アイス食べたいなあ〜と思っていたら目の前にHelado Artesanial（アイスクリームやさん）が出現したので迷わず入った。ちょっと高いけどおいしかった。
I arrived to Los Andes around 1am, and ran into a great icecream shop.
ケータイを充電しつつのんびりだらだらしてたら15時になってしまった。明日までにプコンにつかないといけないのだが、あと180kmあまりある。ヒッチを試みたが、途中でめんどくさくなって、えーい！いってしまえー！という気分になった。そこからなぜか火が点いたように漕ぎ出し、20km先のフニンという町でビールを買ってからさらに20km北の川で野宿。
110km走ったあとに、川と夕日を見ながら飲むビールは最高だった。おそらく南米ラスト野宿。
I have to be in Pucon tomorrow, which is 180km from here. I first thought to hitch a ride, but I kind of made up my mind to do it by myself. I grabbed a beer in Junin and carried on another 20km. A beautiful site by the river. This is my last wild camp in South America, and I enjoyed my treat after riding 110k.
明日は140km走らないといけない。
途中で峠も国境越えもあるし、気合い入れていく！

気合いを入れて5:30に目覚ましをセットしたのに、起きたら7:30で、慌てて飛び起きて8時過ぎに出発。はじめの35kmはゆるやかなのぼりで、ラニン山がきれいに見えてとても気持ちが良い。どことなく富士山に似ている。標高も3747mだし。
I set my alarm at 5:30, but I realized it was 7:30.
The first 35k was a gentle slope with a great view of Volcano Lanin.
この調子なら昼には国境に着くかな〜、と思っていたが甘かった。国立公園に入った瞬間からとてつもない悪路。時折降りて押さないと進まないぐらい砂が深い。
I was going in a nice pace, so I thought I could make it to the border by noon, but that didn't happen. After entering the National park, the pavement finished and came up a awful sandy road. The sand was sometimes so deep that I couldn't ride.
結局1時過ぎにアルゼンチン側の国境に着いた。出国手前のお店でこの辺りの先住民族であるマプチェ族のピアスを買った。厄除けらしいのだが、常に磨いてピカピカにしておかないと効果がないらしい。わたしに不向きの代物である。
チリ側の出国までさらに時間がかかり、結局14:30になってしまった。プコンまであと80km。まだ半分も来ていない。夕暮れまでに間に合うかしら。
I arrived to the Argentinean immigration at 1pm. And it was 2:30pm when I finished all the border crossing events. 80k left to Pucon. I hope I can make it before it gets dark.
しかしここからはほぼ下り坂。もったいないぐらい急な下りであっという間に40km進んだ。
It was a steep downhill and it didn't take long to do 40k.
クラレウエのカフェでタルトとイチゴジュース。この村にはマプチェ族の文化が色濃く残っていて、アートと食の市場というとても心惹かれる催しが開かれていたようだが、残念ながら時間がないのでパス。
I went into a cafe in Curarrehue. This village has a lot of Mapuche influence, and I wish I had more time to see it.
その後もおいしそうなものの誘惑に駆られ、130km地点のプコンの町に着いたのは20時前。そこから先の道が分からず、WiFiを求めて辿り着いたレストランで、思わずビールとパステルデチョクロという料理を頼んでしまい、気付けばみるみるうちに暗くなっていく。
It was before 8pm when I arrived to Pucon. I didn't know the way from here, so I was looking for a wifi, and I ended up ordering a beer and pastel de Choclo, which wasn't a really good idea. It was starting to get dark...
案内のメールに「ダートを上がって」とあったので、なんとなく嫌な予感はしていたのだけど、ラスト2kmのダートは本当にキツかった。押してもずり下がるほど急な道で、登山靴に履き替えて自転車を持ち上げながらやっとこさ進む。滝のように汗を流しながら、目的地に着いた頃には真っ暗だったけど、月明かりに照らされたビジャリカ火山が美しかった。
The last few km was so hard. I couldn't even stand straight with my heavy bike, and I had to change to my trekking boots or otherwise I kept in slipping down the steep gravel road. It was already dark, I could barely see anything, I was sweating like crazy, but the Volcano Villarica was beautiful lighted by the moon.
南米ラスト走行は137km。
今まで120km以上走ったことないし、途中で峠も国境もあるから正直無理かな〜ヒッチしようかな〜と思ったが、「いやいや、最後ぐらい限界突破しないと！」と覚悟を決めてからはただひたすらペダルを回した。ダートや深砂が出てくると宝石の道やアウストラル街道の過酷な道を思い出した。あれに比べればなんてことはない。今までの経験が背中を押ししてくれた。
I ended up doing 137k today. I've never biked so much, and I thought it might be impossible, so I'm proud of myself. It was my last ride in South America. Every time i had a bad road, it reminded me of the lagunas route, but nothing is bad as that. All those experiences encouraged myself.
半年に及んだ南米編もこれにてひとまず完結。
明日から3日間ナチュラルビルディングの建築のお手伝いをして、サンティアゴまでバスで向かい、来週はいよいよキューバへ！
So it is the end of my 6months in South America. I'm going to help with some natural building for few days, get a bus to Santiago, and fly to Cuba next week!!

Day 260 CIDEP permaculture center
2/1 Wed
起きたら8時前。どうやら三代目テントは陽が差し込まないので寝坊するようだ。
朝ごはんがおすすめだよ、とオーナーに言われたのにオーナーは最後まで寝ていてなぜか他の宿泊客が朝食の準備をしてくれた。フルーツが足りないからと買い出しにまで行ってくれた。オーナーは朝ごはん美味しかったでしょ？とドヤ顔で聞いてきた。あんた寝てたやん、と思ったけどたしかによかったのでゆるす。
"We have good breakfast"
That's what the owner said, but the owner woke up at last and the other guests some why prepared the breakfast.
カナダ人のHeikoと話しているうちにここから10kmあまり北にあるヒッピーコミュニティに行くことになった。わたしも北に向かうのでちょうどいい。彼は自転車を持っていないので街でレンタルしてから向かう。案の定途中からダートになった。
I was talking with one of the guests, Heiko and decided to go to a hippy village which is 10km north of El Bolson. He rented a bike in the town and we headed out. It became ripio again.
Heikoの情報によると、どうやら近くにパーマカルチャーセンターもあるらしく、せっかくなので訪ねることにした。10kmぐらい進んだところで場所を尋ねるとあと2kmほど先にあるという。やっと看板を見つけたが、道を外れてからも2kmぐらい歩いた。
According to Heiko, there is also a permaculture center around here. We found the sign and walked down the path.
Heikoは植物に詳しくて、歩きながらこれが食べられるとかこれは何に効くとか教えてくれた。そういう人にとても憧れるのだが、記憶力の悪いわたしは何も覚えていない。実に残念な脳みそである。
Heiko knows a lot about edible plants and herbs. I really want to learn more about those stuff, but it's such a pity that I have a very bad memory.
敷地に入るとたくさんのナチュラルビルディングがあって早速テンションが上がる。
メインっぽい建物でオラ！と声をかけると、中から人が出てきてわざわざ案内してくれた。（ちなみにあとから気付いたのだが、実はここ、わたしがボランティアをしようと思って連絡を取っていたところだった。）
There were many natural buildings. We approached to the main house and said "Hola" and a guy came out and he was so kind to show us around. I realized afterwards that this was one of the places I was thinking to volunteer.
彼の名はニコラス。仲間とともにここを運営している。夏の間はいつもボランティアやコースの受講生で溢れているらしいが、この日はちょうどコースが終わったばかりのようで彼以外の人は見当たらなかった。
His name is Nicholas. He is running this center with his friends. During summer, there are lots of volunteers, but there was no one else because it had just finished the week before.
ソーラークッカーで豆を煮ているところ。晴れていると1時間ほどで煮えるらしい。触ってみると火傷するほど熱かった。
Cooking beans in a solar cooker. It will be ready in a hour.
チャリダー必見自転車洗濯機。これは是非とも欲しい。

たくさんのナチュラルビルディングの建物は、ストローベイル、スリップストロー、コブ、プラスチックゴミ利用などひとつひとつ違う技法を試したり、粘土と砂の比率、ナチュラルペインティングの種類を変えたり、と常に実験しながら最善の方法を模索しているという。
Each natural buildings used a different method such as straw bale, strip straw, cob, and reuse of plastic garbage. They keep on experimenting by changing the ratio of sand and clay to make bricks, or using different kinds of natural painting to see which is the best way.
「今まで試した中で何が一番よかったか？」と聞くと、向きによって違うという。日当たりの良い北側はコブ＋ボトルウォール（ただしガラスを入れすぎると冷えやすいので少なめに）、逆に南側はストローベイルで断熱し、窓をつけないことによって熱が逃げるのを防ぐそうだ。ひとつの建物の中でも臨機応変にいろんな技法を用いるというのは考えてみれば当たり前のことなのかもしれないが、わたしには目から鱗だった。
ボランティアが作ったというステンドグラスや丸太を埋め込んだデザインも素敵。ひとりひとり違う特技を持っているからこその多様なデザインだそう。
テクニックや理論もさることながら、素敵だなあ、マネしたいなあ、と思わせる見た目の美しさというのはとても大事だと再認識。
"What is the best method among all?" I asked, and he said it depends on the side. The north side, which has alot of sunlight, is better for cob and bottles (but not too many bottles because they don't obtain the heat), while the south side is better to have a thick insulation like straw bale, and no windows. It was interesting because I've never thought about changing methods in the same building.
The stained glass and all the designs were done by the volunteers. Each person has a different skill, which makes all the diverse designs.
この時期はベリーやプラムが溢れていて食べ放題。ここは楽園かと思いましたよ。こんなでっかいブラックベリーはじめてみた。しかもおいしい。
It was fruits paradise!! So many plums and berries. I've never seen a blackberry this big!!
最後に水を引いているという沢を案内してもらったのだけど、底まで見えるほど水が澄んでいて、思わずうっとりするほど美しかった。
We went to the stream which is their water source, and it was amazingly beautiful. The water was so clear that you can see the bottom.

そこからまたダートを15kmぐらい走ったのだが、登りが多くてつかれた。そして案の定パンクした。以前教えてもらった、タイヤとチューブの間に使わなくなったチューブを挟む、という裏ワザを試してみた。これで耐パンク性能が上がるといいのだけど。
After that, I had another 15 km dirt road, and a flat tire again. I tried the tip that other cyclists told me-- to put an old tube between the inner tube and the tire. I hope it has more resistance to puncture.
そんなわけで今日はあまり進まず、40km地点でキャンプ。川が近くでなかなかいいかんじのスポットである。野良犬が2匹やってきてわたしのそばで寝てる。
So I ended up doing only 40 km today. It's a nice spot beside the river. Two dogs came to sleep close to me.
明日はなんとしてもバリローチェまで行ってビールを飲む！
I'm defenitely going to Bariloche to have a beer tomorrow!!
