Day 18-26 Portland #2 Connie's house

Amazing!!

Connie's house is just amazing. She showed me silk and wool which she dyed with the plants she grew, and the stoll which was made from that silk, a spoon made of Elk horn, pottery to clear the water, brain tanned buckskin, shoes made of rabbit skin... Everything was so amazing that I could only say "Wow!!"

Connie raises rabbits as protein sources. She also trades them to get other meat or things she need.

She was just back from her trip to the Oregon coast to fetch some seaweed at the low tide, so there were many kinds of seaweed such as Konbu and Nori in her kitchen.

She prepared lunch for us and we ate at her garden. It was a unusually hot day but the lunch was great.

After lunch, she showed me her garden. This is a compost toilet, which is a bucket with a seat. You only have to put sawdust after you poop, and it goes to the compost pit with the kitchen compost and cut weeds. The compost pit is covered with a black sheet which rises the temperature, and it turns into fertilized soil after one year.

There are many fruit trees and perenial plants which enables to harvest more with less effort.

These are plants for natural dye, such as indigo and weld. So beautiful colors!!

Taking the advantage of the rainy season in the winter, the roof water is collected into a tank which goes to the washing machine. In the summer, solar shower is available to use.

There are goldfish in the water tank which eats the mosquitos.

Connie got married recently, and their wedding ceremony was held at the intersection of the neighborhood. Her policy was to not spend even a dime, so she got a dress and shirt from her friend and dyed it into beautiful colors, the food was potluck, the flowers and music was a gift from their neighbors. I saw the pictures, and it was such a sweet ceremony. Everything was so amazing and wonderful. Thank you so much, Connie and Rosemarie!!
