Day 54-57 Berkeley

ちょうど同じ時期に浜松の友人、キヨさんとようちゃんがベイエリアにきており、パーマカルチャー関係のスポットめぐりをするというので、一緒に回らせていただくことにした。
I joined my friends from Hamamatsu, Kiyo and Yoko to see many permaculture and sustainable places in Berkeley.
まずはふさこさんのお宅へ。 ふさこさんは元ヒッピー。20年ぶりに会ったのだが、全く変わっていなくてびっくり。とても80歳とは思えないぐらいパワフルで、ふさこさんのさまざまな武勇伝を聞くのか面白かった。戦時中空襲から逃げた話。アーティストの前夫を追ってインドに住み、ネパールでヒッピーに出会い、Love&Peaceを掲げて生きる彼らに衝撃を受けて自らもヒッピーになり、カナダからメキシコまで子連れでヒッチハイクし、その後ニューメキシコのヒッピーコミューンで暮らし、バークレーにたどり着きふとん会社をはじめたという話。ふさこさんの人生はへたな小説よりも面白い。自伝を執筆中らしい。なかなか納得が行かず、かれこれ20年書いているそう。
We went to Fusako’s house. I couldn’t believe she is 80 years old because she hasn’t changed at all these 20years and was so energetic. She was a hippie, and it was so fun to listen to all of her legendary stories. She experienced the boming during the war, and ran away with her sister. She went to India to look for her ex-husband, who was an artist, and met hippie people in Nepal, got inspired by their Love and peace lifestyle and became a hippie herself, hitchhiked from Canada to Mexico with her three little kids, lived in a hippie commune in New Mexico, moved to Berkeley and started a futon business. Her life is more interesting than a novel. She is trying to write her autobiography.
そのあとオークランドにあるCasa de Pazへ。ここはパンチョとサムが5年前にはじめたギフトエコノミーのコミュニティで、毎週日曜日は Fruta giftという、近所の人に無料で果物や野菜を配布するイベントを行っている。この日も40人近い人が来たそう。毎日朝晩1時間瞑想をしており、毎週金曜日には瞑想のあとに手作りのヴィーガン料理を振る舞っている。わたしたちも夕方の瞑想に参加させてもらった。この辺りはギャングの巣窟で治安が悪いことで有名らしいのだが、この家の周辺にはとても平和な空気が流れていた。
Casa de Paz is an community in Oakland which is open to the public. On Sunday, they were holding a “Fruta gift” day to giveaway the fruits and vegetables to the neighbors. They also welcome people to meditate and have a free meal every Friday.
This place is famous for the gangsters, but there was a peaceful atmosphere surrounding that house.
そのあとふさこさんちに戻って夕食を食べた。 ご主人のミノが作ってくれたサンドイッチがとってもおいしかった。
ちなみにミノも筋金入のヒッピーで、料理、左官、畑、大工仕事、乳しぼりまでなんでもやった。お金がなかったから自分でやるしかなかった。そして技術を身につけていったという。家の中にある家具は全てミノが作ったと聞いて驚き。
Fusako’s husband Mino, is also a hippie and he can do cooking, farming, plowing, carpentery, or milking the cows. He had to do everything by himself because they didn’t have enough money. I was surprised to hear that he built all the furniture in his house.
以下箇条書きで行ってきたところを紹介
I’ll briefly introduce the places I visited.
タイニーハウス、ロケットマスヒーター、グレイウォーターシステム、、コンパクトでありながらパーマカルチャーの要素がぎっしり詰まっている。
They show great examples for urban permaculture such as tiny houses, rocket mass heaters, and grey water systems.
50年以上サンフランシスコのど真ん中で無料で野菜を配り続けているツリーさんにお会いした。 ツリーさんの仕草ひとつひとつが植物と対話するようでいつまでも見ていたい気持ちになった。 ポピーシードをわたしの手の上に出して、そのなかの一粒を指してこう言った。 「この小さな粒には宇宙全体が含まれている。そして我々はこの一粒よりもらさらに小さい」 わたしは泣きそうになった。
Tree gives grows food in the middle of San Fransisco to give it to everyone for more than 50 years. Every motions he made were as talking gently to the plants and I wished that I could see that forever. He poured out some poppy seeds on my hand, and pointed at one of the seeds and said, “This seed contains the entire universe. And we are even smaller than this.” I was touched by his words.
夏休み中だったので残念ながら授業は見られなかったが、キッチンティーチャーに会うことができた。彼女はなんとこの学校の卒業生で、他の仕事についていたがこの授業が忘れられず戻ってきたという。 ガーデンの敷地が広大でさすがはアメリカ。
We couldn’t see the classes due to summer vacation, but we met the kitchen teacher. She is actually a graduate student from this school, and came back this year because she loved the class here.
The gardens were so much American size!!
そして道具もすべて本物。トルティーヤを作るためのトウモロコシを挽く道具がかわいらしい。和食器もあった。
The tools are for professional. They even had a cute grater for corn and Japanese bowls.
何もかも美味しかった。特に野菜が素晴らしく、主役の肉や魚を凌駕するほどだった。
Everything was amazing. The vegetables were remarkable, sometimes overtaking the main meat or fish.
こんなかんじでバークレーの面白いところをたくさんまわらせてもらいました。キヨさん、ようちゃん、ありがとう！！
