Bamboo Hunting

One of my mission is to make bamboo crafts from NZ bamboo.

However, it is difficult to find bamboo around here in the town of Auckland.

Ngairie found some information that said there are some bamboo in Titirangi, which is about 40min drive from here.

"It's a nice place so we can go for a drive" said Ngairie.

I can't believe how kind she is.

On the way we visited Ngairie's Japanese friend.

They were many cute dogs jumping around, because they often do dog sitting.

Shoko also likes handicrafts, and she showed me her Maori flax art that she learned at the weaving class.

She also gave us information that there is a walkway close from here that also has bamboo.

We looked for the entrance of the walkway, parked the car and started to walk.

It was a nice walk, and we saw many flax and silver fern trees on the way.

We couldn't find any bamboo, but it was a nice exercise anyway.

We went back driving to Titirangi.

I looked hard to see the plants on the side of the road.

"Oh!!...no, not bamboo. Oh!!...no again. Oh!!! Bamboo!! It's bamboo!!"

Ngairie parked the car and I hopped out to have a look.

It was thin, but acceptable for crafts.

The problem was that it was facing the street.

I carefully chose one and cutted off, but it happened to fall towards the road.

"Oh nooooo!!!"

I was lucky because the electricity lines caught the bamboo and prevented from falling down.

Ngairie helped me to pull it back.

Oh, that was scary!

We carried it into the car and drove further.

There were some bamboo as well, but most of them seemed like a fence owned by someone.

It was almost time to give up, when we saw a big bamboo bush on the other side of the road.

"Wow...this is perfect!!!"

I was so excited. It was the perfect size for crafts and furthermore, it was a little bit off the road which made it easier to cut down without worrying about the bamboo falling down on the road or people looking at you as a stranger.

I chose one again, and carried it back to the car.

I never imagined I would be so happy just to find bamboo.

JAPAN MART

I made Sukiyaki for my host family.

Ngairie's mother used to have a Japanese penpal, and she went to visit them for 6 months. It was very rare back in those days for a young woman to travel overseas by herself, and many local newspapers wrote about her.

After several years, she went back again with her whole family. That's why Ngairie and her family have much interest in Japan. Ngairie also lived in Tokushima for 6 months, teaching English, and her twin brother got married to a Japanese woman and is living in Yokohama.

After dinner, we were talking about our bamboo hunting stories.

I heard that there was a guy called "bamboo man" who grew many kinds of bamboo in Titirangi, and when Ngairie mentioned it, her parents said,

"Oh bamboo man, of course we know him."

"What!!? You know the bamboo man!!?"

"Yes, he grew all kinds of bamboo and started to sell it to the neighbors."

That's why they were so many bamboo around there.

It was such a fun bamboo day.
