Day 219-220 The most beautiful and challenging border crossing in the world
アウストラル街道の終着点オイギンスからアルゼンチンへ抜ける道は「世界一美しくて過酷な国境越え」と言われている。車道はないので徒歩か自転車か馬でしか通れないが、この難関を制した者だけに許された特権・裏フィッツロイが見られるらしい。過去のチャリダーのブログや北に向かう人たちの情報からかなり過酷な道のりになることは覚悟していた。
The way from Villa O'Higgins to Argentina is called "The most beautiful and challenging border crossing in the world". Only hiking, biking, or horse back riding is the way to go through, but you can see the Fitz Roy from the other side. According to othe people's blogs and information from the people heading north, I knew that it would be tough.

オイギンスは小さいけどかわいらしい町である。
Villa O'Higgins is a cute little town.
町の図書館にはパソコンも4台あり、無料でインターネットが使える。iPhoneがお逝きになったので足繁く図書館に通う。
The library has 4 PCs that you can use for free. I went often because my iPhone died.
久しぶりに晴れたので濡れたものを乾かしたり荷物を整理したり。
国境越えは1gでも軽い方がいいというアドバイスを受けて、溜め込んでいた食料をここぞとばかりに調理し、張り切って明日のお弁当まで作る。他の人は買い込んでたけど。
夕方フェリー会社でチケット購入。オイギンスから国境を越えには２つの湖を渡らなければいけないのだが、チリ側の湖は3時間で約6000円、アルゼンチン側は1時間で約4000円とビンボーチャリダーにはなかなか厳しいお値段。世界一美しくて過酷、かつexpensiveな国境越え。明日はいよいよ決戦の日！
We bought a ticket for the ferry. We need to cross two lakes, but I t is pretty much expencive for a low budget cyclist. The first lake costs $60, and the second is $40.

いい天気になると聞いていたのに水の音で目がさめる。えー雨か。。テンションが下がるが外に出ると思っていたほどひどくはない。オイギンスの町からフェリー乗り場まで7km。いちばん早く準備を始めたのに、荷物を積んでる間にみんな気付いたら出発してて結局最後になってしまった。相変わらずのろまです。
We expected good weather but I woke up with the sound of rain. It wasn't so bad though. I started packing early, but when I realized, everyone else had already left...
フェリー乗り場までの道のりはさながらレースのように15人以上のチャリダーが抜きつ抜かれつ。
ここがアウストラル街道の終着点。
7km to the ferry terminal. The end of Carretera Austral.
フェリーに乗り込む。
対岸まで3時間。だんだん晴れてきた。
3 hours to the other side. The weather got better.
対岸に到着。
Arrived to the other side.
チリ側イミグレまで約2km。なかなかキツイ坂だけど男性陣が先回りして自転車を置いて押すのを手伝ってくれたりして助かった。
景色は最高。
2km to the Chikean immigration. It was steep but the boys helped pushing the bike which was very helpful. The view is great.
頼もしい仲間たち
アルゼンチンとの国境で遅めの昼食。デシエルト湖のフェリーは17時か翌11時なのだが、この時点ですでに14:30だった。
Late lunch at the border. The ferry from Lago Desierto leaves at 5pm or 11am, but it was already 2:30pm.
そしてアルゼンチンに入った瞬間からひどい道になる。まず幅が人ひとりギリギリ通れるぐらいまで狭くなり、連日の雨のせいか道が川のようになっている。
The path gets crazy as soon as you get to the Argentinean side. It gets narrow that one person can barely pass, and the paths all turned into rivers.
後半になるとさらにひどくなり、膝上まである川や、パニアをつけたままでは通れない幅の道、というかもう道とも認めたくないぐらいの悪路続きに思わず笑ってしまった。アルゼンチンはよっぽどチャリダーに恨みがあるのでしょう。
The latter half was even worse, with rivers up to the knees, and extremely narrow paths that are impossible to pass without taking off your panniers. I guess Argentineans hate cyclists.
ここでもやはりブレーキが効かないのはかなりの痛手で、道からあえて外れたり、茂みの中に突っ込んだりしてやっと暴走を止める。早くブレーキ直したい。
It was even harder with my broken brakes, and I had to drive into the bush to stop my bike. I really want to fix my brakes...
そしてついに見えました、デシエルト湖と裏フィッツロイが！！
And finally, the back Fitz Roy and Lago Desierto!!
どうにかしてたどり着いた湖のほとりで本日はキャンプです。絶景！！
We camped in front of the lake. Beautiful!!
すごく大変だったけど、あの孤独で過酷な宝石の道を思えば、こんなのは序の口で、仲間の存在の大きさを感じた。荷物を運ぶのを手伝ってくれたり、後ろから押してくれたり、何よりもひとりじゃなくてみんなで乗り越えている、というのが精神的に大きかった。仲間ってすごい。
It was very tough, but not as much as the Laguna route, because I had friends to cooperate. I really really appreciate all their help both physically and mentally.
大きな山場を越えた、とこの時は思っていました。。

Day 216-218 Tortel to O'Higgins
暴走チャリと夏のパンク祭り
12/19 Mon
朝ブレーキの点検をすると前も後ろも調子が良くない。あれこれいじってみたけど良くならず、同じ宿のチャリダー達に助けを求めるが結局だめ。みんなが9時過ぎに出発する中、わたしはまたもや遅れて10時に。
今日はトルテルから40kmちょっとあるユンガイのフェリー乗り場まで行き、対岸のリオブラボーまで渡る予定。前半20kmは平らだが、後半20kmは大きな峠を越えねばならない。
I checked my brakes but neither of them worked well. i asked help for the other cyclists, but no one could figure it out... Everyone else left at 9, but I kept on working on it and left at 10.
I'm going to take a ferry from Yungay, which is 40km away. The first half is pretty flat, but the last half has a big hill.
キツイ登りを登りきったところで、やはりブレーキが効かないのでブレーキパッドを交換する。そしてしばらくすると今度は前輪がパンク。昨日チューブを補修し忘れたために予備がなく、パッチを貼ろうとしたが雨で濡れてうまく貼れず、仕方ないので押すことにした。フェリー乗り場まで残り8km。最終のフェリーまであと2時間。間に合うかしら。
After the steep climbing, I changed my brake pads. In a while, my front tire had a flat. I forgot to repair the tube and I didn't had a spare so I needed to patch it, but it wouldn't work with the heavy rain, and I had to push my bike. 8km to the ferry terminal, 2 hours for the last ferry...
せっかくの大好物の下り坂なのに乗れず、荷物満載のヘビー級チャリは下り坂では押すというよりも転がらないように抑えるのが大変で、おまけにブレーキも効かないため、足でブレーキをしようとするが、ズザザザザーッとほとんどチャリに引きずられるようにして進む。傾斜もカーブもきつく、何度かガードレールに激突しそうになり、「ギャーー止まってー！！止まれーー！！」
と奇声を発しながら下った。せっかく乾かした服も靴も汗だか雨だかわからないけどびしょびしょになり、暴走パンクチャリを抑えるのに疲れてついに乗ってしまった。。これが大失敗。チューブを穴だらけにしてしまった上に、しまいには走っている途中にタイヤがホイールから外れた。ホイールが壊れなくてよかったけどめちゃくちゃ怖かった。。
I usually love downhills, but it was so hard to try to STOP my full loaded heavy bike going down with my broken brakes, so I had to brake with my feet, and I was rather dragged by my bike. The hill was also steep, with many curves, and I almost crushed into the barrier. "STOP!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!" I was screaming. All my clothes and shoes were soaking wet with sweat and rain, and I was so tired that I ended up riding my bike... which was NOT a good idea. I made so many extra holes in my tube, and my tire eventually came off the wheel...!!! I'm glad that the wheel didn't brake, but it was so scary...
どうにか18:00の最終フェリーに間に合い、身も心もボロボロだったけど、フェリーの船員さんたちがとてつもなくやさしくて、ブレーキを直そうとしてくれたうえに、寒くて震えるわたしに温かいお茶とシチューとパンを食べさせてくれ、お土産にフルーツまで持たせてくれた。感激。おかげでわたしの冷え切った心と体はぽっかぽかになりました。
I made it to the 6pm ferry, and I was so worn out and shiverring, but the sailors on the ferry were so nice that they helped me fixing the brakes, gave me some hot tea, and even invited me for a hot dinner. They also gave me some bread and fruits for the next day. I felt so thankful and warmed up my body and soul. By the time I got off the ferry, I had a big smile on my face.
対岸の待合室に着くと自転車が5台。先のフェリーで着いていたみんなが出迎えてくれた。みんなわたしがなかなか出てこないのできっと最終便に間に合わなかったのだろうと思っていたらしい。すみません、ごはん食べてました。てへ
ピットインしたレーシングカーよろしく、わたしの穴だらけのチューブやブレーキを直してくれる。本当にありがたい。
ついていないと思っていたこんな日ですら、こうしてみんなに助けられてわたしは今日も生きている。本当にありがとう。
When I reached the other side, there were 5 bikes in front of the waiting room, and everyone welcomed me. They were thinking that I couldn't make it because I didn't come out from the ferry. Sorry, I was eating dinner.
The boys started to fix my bike like an pit-in racing car. Even on an unlucky day like today, I feel so thankful for everyone helping me out.

最近の日課はパンク修理です、というぐらい毎日パンクしている。朝みんなが出発したあとにも黙々とチューブを直す。結局昨日のチューブには11個の穴が空いていた。よい子はパンクしたチャリに乗ってはダメ、ゼッタイ。
My recent daily routine is to repair flats. There was 11 holes in my tube yesterday. NEVER ride bikes on flats.
昨日の調子だともうリタイアかと思っていたけど、いろいろいじってみたら奇跡的になんとか乗れる状態に復活したので行けるところまで行ってみることにする。自転車に乗れるっていうことがこんなに嬉しいなんて。
はじめの15kmは比較的平坦で、そこから峠が3つ。その2つ目の峠の下りでまたもや後輪がパンク。修理しているとまた雨が激しくなってきた。
I was thinking it might be impossible to bike further, but I made it functioning again. I never felt so happy that I can ride my bike.
The first 15km was flat, and three hills afterwards. I got a flat again on the second hill. Raining hard. I was glad I had a spare tube this time.
パンが落ちてる！と思ったら石でした。
ほら、お腹すいてたから...
I thought it was a bread, but it was a stone.
I was so hungry...
途中で橋があり、その下でキャンプしようかと考えたが、なんか湿ってるしやめようと思い、激しい坂を登っているうちに雨が強くなってきて、あーやっぱりさっきのところにすればよかったと後悔。でもそのうち雨も上がり、坂を下ると湖と氷河が見えて、さらには虹が出てきて、あまりの美しさに涙が出た。なんだかここ数日の壮絶な日々がすべて報われた気がした。
I found a bridge and was wondering whether to camp there, but carried on, and then came a steep hill and strong rain so I regretted that I didn't stop. But the rain stopped soon and after going down hill, lakes glaciers, and even a rainbow came up. It was so beautiful that I felt all of the last hard days had been rewarded.
そのさらに数キロ先のおうちの納屋みたいなところにキャンプさせてもらうことにした。これって不法侵入ですかね。いや、本当は家主に聞こうと思ったのだけど、数時間待っても家主は帰ってこなかったので。。しばらくするとスイス人チャリダーもやってきた。彼は逆方向なのでいろいろと情報交換。どうやらオイギンスのフェリーは悪天候でよく運休になるらしく、彼は一週間待ったらしい。わたしは訳あってどうしても23日のフェリーに乗らないといけないのだが、もし乗れない場合は元来た道を戻り、850kmヒッチハイクしなければいけないことになる。そして連日の雨で川が増水しており、膝までの深さの川を4-5つぐらい越えないといけないらしい。不安だ。そもそもフェリーが来るのか不安だ。
夜からまた雨が強くなった。屋根があるところでよかった。けっこう雨漏りしてるけれども。
There was a refugio on the map, but I couldn't find it so I ended up under a roof close to someone's house. Anothe cyclist came. He was heading north so we exchanged some information. He told me that the ferry from Villa O'Higgins sometimes don't come due to the bad eeather, and they had to wait for a week. I have a reason that I must get on the ferry on the 23rd, or otherwise go back hitchhiking 850km to get to El Chalten. And due to the rain, you have to cross 4-5 rivers which are up to knee height.I hope I can make it. I hope the ferry comes.
The rain got very strong at midnight. I'm glad we have a roof, though it's leaking pretty much.

昨夜の雨は山の上では雪だったようで、中腹あたりまで真っ白になっていた。
オイギンスまで50km。パンクしないように慎重に走る。
The rain yesterday seemed to be snow on the top of the mountains.
50km to Villa O'Higgins. I biked carefully so that I don't get a flat.
牛も見守ってくれる。ちょっとこわい。

14:30頃にオイギンスに到着。チェックインしたホステルにはなんと20人近いチャリダーが。

一度にこんなにたくさんのチャリダーに会うのははじめて。ほぼみんな北に向かうようなのだが、どうやらフェリーが一週間来なかったためにたくさん人が溜まったらしい。初の日本人チャリダーにも会った。またもやいろいろと情報交換。国境越えは相当過酷なようだ。
I've never seen so many cyclists in one time. Most of them were heading north, and it was due to the ferry which didn't come for a week. I met a Japanese cyclist for the first time.
そして連日の雨でついにわたしのiPhoneがお逝きになりました。地図も走行情報もブログも写真のアップロードもすべてこれで管理してたのでとても困ります。お米に入れておくといいと聞いたので電源切ってジップロックの中に米と一緒に封印した。とてもシュール。写真とればよかった。

フェリー会社に行くと翌22日のフェリーは運休だという。あさってフェリーが出なければ850kmのヒッチハイクトリップへ。どうかどうかフェリーが来ますように！！！
The ferry tomorrow seems to be canceled. I hope it comes the next day or otherwise I need to do a 850km hitchhiking trip. Ferry por favor!!!
Day 214-215 Cochrane to Tortel
12/17 Sat
コクランからオイギンスはアウストラル街道の中でも特に雨が多いらしく、ここを濡れずに抜けられるチャリダーはほぼいないらしい。そんな中、この日だけは晴れ予報だというのでみんな貴重な晴れ間を狙って早く出発したが、わたしは早速出遅れ10時に。そして町を出ようとすると今度は羊の群れに行く手を阻まれる。
Cochrane to Villa O'Higgins is a very wet section in Carretera Austral, and its said that almost no cyclists can go through dry. Today was one of the few days that was sunny, so eveyone tried to leave early, but I was late again. And when I tried to get out of the town, a sheep herd blocked my way.
アップダウンの続く道。ようやくダウンヒルだぜ！と思った矢先にまたもやパンク。これで３度目。
Up and down. I got a flat again on the downhill.
パンク修理してたら16:30になってしまった。近くに素敵な家族がやっている農園&キャンプ場があるというのでそこに向かってみる。しかし片道10kmの遠回りだということがわかり、とても迷ったけどせっかくなので行ってみることにした。ゲートやダートに阻まれてなかなか進まない。でも景色は素晴らしい。それにしても誰も見かけないなあと思ったら、やっとの思いでたどり着いたキャンプ場にも誰もいなかった。疲れ果てたので氷河が一望できる牧場の一角に忍び込んでテントを張る。
After fixing my flat, it was 4:30pm. There seemed to be a nice farm and campsite owned by a nice family, so I tried. I hesitated when I found out it was a 20km detour, but I headed anyway. Many gates and dirt roads, but the scenery was beautiful. But I ended up finding the campsite empty. I was tired so I pitched my tent in front of the glaciers.
散歩してたら馬がついてきた。わたしが歩くと馬も進み、わたしが止まると馬も止まる。だるまさんごっこみたい。

12/18 Sun
激しい雨で3:30に目が覚め、そのまま寝付けず、びしょ濡れのテントをたたんで6:30に出発。結局素敵な家族に会えずに残念。街道まで10km戻るのが大変だった。街道に戻ってからは割と平坦だが、雨がどんどん強くなり、靴の中はプールに。この靴防水だと思ってたんだけどな。
Hard rain woke me up at 3:30am, and I couldn't go back to sleep, so I decided to leave. It was pretty hard to go back to the Carretera. The rain got stronger and my shoes got soaked. I thought these shoes were waterproof...
しばらく走ってるとまた後輪がパンク。雨の中のパンク修理に手間取り、すっかり身体が冷え切って震えていると、通りかかった車がお湯と肉をくれた。
I had a flat again. Fixing flats in the rain is hard, and I was shiverring as well. A car stopped by and gave me some hot water and meat.
しばらく走ってると変な音がするなあと思っていたら、今度は前輪のブレーキが取れた。えぇっ、、取れた、、！？
After a while, my front brake came off...
仕方ないのでしばらく後輪ブレーキだけで走っていたが、こちらも雨で濡れてるせいかあまり効かず、下り坂が怖くてたまらない。わたしから下り坂を取ったら何が残るというのですか。もう疲れ果てたのでヒッチしようと思ったけど、こんな時に限ってぜんぜん車が通らないし、通っても荷台がない車ばかり。諦めてしばらく走っていたところ一台の車が。すかさず手を上げてトルテルまで乗せていただくことができた。こんなずぶ濡れのわたくしを拾ってくれてありがとうございます。。
I was running with one brake, but my rear brake didnt work well, and it was so scary going downhill with broken brakes. I tried to hitch, but so few cars with room for me and my bike. After a while, I finally got a ride and they took me to Tortel. Thank you so much for picking a soaking wet miserable cyclist...
トルテルに着き、うろうろしていると何台か自転車を発見。数日前に会ったアルゼンチン人夫婦とスロベニア人カップルだった。幸い空室があったので早速熱いシャワー浴び、濡れたものを乾かさせてもらった。
I arrived to Tortel and was wondering around when I found few bikes in front of a hostel. They were the Argentinian couple and Slovenian couple, whom I met few days ago. I was lucky that they still had room. I recovered with a hot shower.
それから町を散策。ここトルテルは木の町。家だけでなく道の代わりに町中を木でできた遊歩道が張り巡らされている。
Tortel is a town eveything made by wood.
広場にある像から想像するに、相当大変な想いをして作られたようだ。
It seems that they had a lot if work to make this.
これだけ雨の多い場所になぜこんな滑りやすい木道を作ったのかは謎だけど、他の町とはぜんぜん違う雰囲気で楽しい。階段も多いので足腰が鍛えられそう。
しかし辺鄙なために何もかもが高い。スーパーには新鮮な野菜はなく、ここに暮らすのは大変だと思った。
冷凍ハンバーグとじゃがいもと玉ねぎを買ってみんなでごはんを作って食べた。
I dont know why they made so slippery walkways on a rainy place, but it was interesting because it's totally different from other towns. Many steps to make you fit.
However, everything is so expensive because its so rural and it's hard to find something fresh.
We cooked frozen hamburgs and french fries.
エリックがわたしのブレーキをガムテープで応急処置してくれた。

屋根があること、壁があること、おいしいごはん、ふかふかのベッド、そして愉快な仲間たち。ひとりでチャリに乗ってると当たり前のことがありがたく感じる。ありがてえありがてえ。
Biking alone makes me appreciate many things... I have a roof, a wall, good food, nice bed, and great friends.
Day 210-213 Tranquilo to Cochrane
12/13 Tue
トランキーロにはマーブルカテドラルという洞窟がある。何十万年もかけて削り出された洞窟はトルコブルーの湖を反射して青く輝く。ツーリスティックだとか写真で見るほどすごくないとかいう意見もあるが、そんなの実際に見てみないとわからないじゃない、というわけであまり期待せずに行ってみた。
There is a famous cave called Marble Cathedral here in Tranquilo. The cave glows blue reflecting the turquoise blue water.
ツアーはひとり10,000ペソだった。はじめ9,000と言われたけど5分後に戻ってきたらなぜか値上げされた。
モーターボートに乗ること約20分。
不思議な形の岩石たち。水で削られるだけでとうしてこんな形になるのでしょうか。
After 20 minutes boat ride, we arrived to the impressive shape of rocks.
期待してなかったら思いの外よかった。みなさまも行かれる際は期待しないことをおすすめします。
I didn't expect much, but it was pretty nice. It's better not to make expectations and you will enjoy it.
今日は天気が良かったから走ればよかったかなと思ったけどまあたまにはのんびりするのもいいですね。
たまってた洗濯物をし、マットやチューブのパンクを修理し、ゆっくりごはんをつくる。
It was a beautiful day so I felt like I should have biked, but it's sometimes nice to have a relaxing time washing clothes, fixing my sleeping mat and my tube.

ドイツ人カップルも合流し、暖炉のぬくぬくした部屋でみんなでワインを飲む。文明社会バンザイ。
The German couple joined us and we had a civilized night in a warm cabin.
12/14 Wed
明け方激しい雨と風で目が覚め、この中走るのかと思うと朝から憂鬱になった。しかし出発する頃にはおさまり、意外とひどくない。最初の10kmはずっとのぼりで、それをクリアすると比較的平ら。
I was woken up by the sound of wind and rain. I felt so blue imagining biking in this weather. But it turned out to be better by the time we left.
次から次へと移り変わる景色。地球というパレットは実に色とりどり。湖や川、ひとつひとつこんなにいろんな色があるなんて知らなかった。
I never knew that there are so many different colors of blue in every lakes and rivers.
それにしてもチャリダーめっちゃ多い。今日だけでイギリス人、フランス人カップル、スロベニア人カップル、スウェーデン人の女の子、ノルウェー人カップルに会った。
so many cyclists!!
そしてまたパンクした。。
これを機にパンク修理上達しよう。。
And I got a flat again...
ベルトランドという町に19時頃に着く。店にはワインすらなかったが、ちょうどアサドパーティーに誘われたので合流することに。しかしキャンプ場を探している間にパタゴニア名物・羊の丸焼きは跡形もなくなくなっていた。。代わりにパン、サラダ、ワインなどを乞食のように貪りました。
We arrived in Bertland around 7pm. They invited us for an Asado party but we went to look for a place to stay and when we came back, the lamb was already gone. But I filled myself with lots of free wine and salad.

1km先の野宿ポイントに移動。
we moved to a free camp 1km out of town.
川の前、木の下、最高の野宿スポットBest place for wild camp just in front of the river under the trees
ここリオベイカーは大きなマスがたくさんいると聞き、設営をすませて早速フライフィッシングをはじめる。
Rio Baker is famous for big trouts, so we started fly fishing.
しかし雨と風がひどくなり、これでは一向に釣れる気がしないのでひとまず退散。フライフィッシングは初心者のわたしには難易度が高すぎるので、町へ戻って普通の釣り竿がないか探し回っていると、おじさんが釣り竿レンタル＋湖まで船を出してくれるというので、一時間後にゲリーを連れて戻ってくるという約束を取り付ける。しかしゲリーは朝焚き木を運ぼうとした時に川に落ち、体調を崩してしまったため、結局ひとりで戻ることに。
ところが約束したおじさんは、もう少し雨がおさまってから、と言い、何時？と聞いても
「うーん、5時か6時か7時」
と言ってぜんぜん取り合ってくれず、1時間半待っても出発する気配がないので諦めてトボトボと店を出たところ、昨日のパーティーにいたガイドの人が釣り竿を貸してくれた。ルアーもゲットし、喜び勇んでいざ釣りを始めようとすると。。ハンドルがない。
Fly fishing is so difficult for a beginner so I went back to the town to look for a normal fishing rod. I found a man who would rent me a rod and also a boat to go out to the lake, so I told him I'll come back in an hour with my friend.
but when I came back, it started
tl rain and he didn't want to go out.
i waited for 2 hours but he didn't seem to leave so I gave up.
when I was walking back, I found a nice guy who lended me his fishing rod.
but when I tried to start, I realized there was no handle.
持っていた工具で代用していたがうまくいかず、せっかく調達したルアーも引っ掛けてなくし、もうつくづくわたしは釣りに縁がないのだなと絶望していたところ、救世主現る。
フランス人のライダー・フーゴ。持っていたルアーを貸してくれ、さらに彼自身が大きなマスを釣り上げた。
i put my tool instead of the handle but it didn't really work, and I lost my lure in the lake. I'm not in luck with fishing.
i almost gave up when a French motorcyclist showed up and lended me his lure. And he caught a huge trout!!!
おかげで念願のマスにありつけました。

相変わらず天気が悪い。ゲリーはもう少しゆっくりすると言うのでコクランに向かう。コクランまでは40kmあまりだが、凶悪な坂しかないと聞きビクビクするわたし。
40km to the next town Cochrane. I heard there are only nasty hills on the way.
川沿いのアップダウン。晴れたと思ってカッパを脱いだ途端に土砂降りになり、慌てて着ると晴れるというパタゴニア名物気まぐれ天気。一時間の間に晴れと雨と風が入れ替わる。まったく気分屋さんですね。
Typical Patagonian weather today. Sun and rain and wind in every few minutes.
どうにかコクランにたどり着く。なぜかハリ○ッドを意識してるコクランさん。
Arrived in Cochrane. He wants to be like Hollywood.
キャンプ場に行くと先日道端で会ったスロベニア人カップルの他にイギリス人チャリダーがいた。
念願の釣り竿もゲット。なかなか高い投資なのでなんか釣れますように。（食べられるやつ）

Day 206-209 Coyhaique to Tranquillo
12/9 Fri
みんなに別れを告げてコジャイケを後にする。登りが多くてなかなか進まないが追い風なのが幸い。下りMax71km/hはおそらく過去最速。風は徐々に強くなり、最後の10kmは向い風かつ登りもきつい。スペイン人&コロンビア人カップルに会う。彼らも同じキャンプ場に向かっているようだ。キャンプ場に着くとドイツ人カップルがいた。その後も続々とチャリダーが集結し、気づけば8人。さすがチャリダー天国。
I left Coyhaique and headed forward. Many climbs but had luck with the wind until the last 10km, which turned into a terrible headwind. I met a Spanish and Colombian couple who were heading to the same campsite. I met the German couple again at the campsite. So many cyclists now.
みんなのごはんがおいしそうで、うらめしそうに見ていたらいろんな人が恵んでくれた。ありがとうございます。ゲリーはワインをくれた。寒いのでみんなさっさとテントに引きこもってしまった。
Everyone else's food looked so nice that I was staring at it, and they shared me some. Thank you :)

今日は風が強い。最初の数キロは下りで、そのあとは向い風&のぼり。そのあとも登りが続くかと思いきや、そこからセロカスティージョまで15kmはずっと下りで、途中からすばらしい絶景になり、終始ニヤニヤが止まらなかった。
Windy day. After few km down came a long uphill with headwind. But the last 15km was all the way down with a spectacular view.
キャンプ場に入るとちょうど3日間のマウンテンバイクのレースが行われているらしく、たくさんのレーサーが泊まっていた。
シャワーを浴びて洗濯をし、買い出しへ。調子に乗って買い込んでしまって重い。
ドライカレーを作り、ワインを飲みながら過ごす。

山が本当に美しい。セロカスティージョのトレッキングコースもとても美しく、しかも誰もいない穴場らしく、近い将来トーレスデルパイネのようになると言われているそうだ。オーストラリア人のカップルは4日間のトレッキングをしてきたそう。わたしも時間があれば行ってみたかったな。
Cerro Castillo is so beautiful. It's said to be the next Torres del Paine in few years, but now there aren't many tourists. The Australian couple did the 4day trek and said it was beautiful.
ゲリーがフライフィッシングを教えてくれるというのだけど、少し急がねば。あと10日あまりでオイギンスまでたどり着けるのだろうか。
Gary said he would teach us fly fishing but it's a pity that I'm in a hurry. I only have 10days to Villa O'higgins. I hope I can make it.

夜から降り出した雨は、朝になっても降ったり止んだり。虹がきれいだった。
it started raining from midnight but a beautiful rainbow came out.
昨日の遅れを取り戻そうと9時に出ると、ちょうどマウンテンバイクのレース開始時刻だったようで、大量のレーサーに追い抜かれてとてもこわかった。そしてまぬけなわたしは何も考えずにその大群について行ったところ、しばらくするとトラックが止まり、道を間違えていることを教えてくれた。早めに教えてもらってよかった。
i tried to leave early but it was just the time that the mountain bike race started,
and it was pretty scary that hundreds of mountain bikers passed by me.
i was thoughtless to follow them, which eventually guided me to the wrong direction. I'm glad that the truck driver told me or otherwise I wouldn't have noticed.

Laguna Verde!!
雨の中あまり進まず、36キロ地点でキャンプ。よく使われる野宿ポイントのようで焚き火場もあり、川の前のなかなかよいロケーション。おnewの30ドルテントが試される時が来た。
I couldn't go far with the rain, and ended up camping in the 36km point. It was a nice place with a fire pit in front of the river. Time to try the torrelance of my new 30 dollar tent.
ゲリーの他に北上しているイギリス人2人組もやってきた。マシュマロと焼きリンゴを作ってめちゃくちゃおいしかった。
I joined Gary and also two cyclists from England heading north.

雨の中のキャンプ。寒いけどたのしい。問題はただひとつ、ワインがない。。

次のトランキーロという町までは90km。砂利道なので１日で行くにはなかなかの距離。わたしは先を急いだ。
90km to the next town. I must hurry because it's quite a lot for gravel.

パンク修理をしてたらゲリーが追いついて修理を手伝ってくれた。彼も今日は調子がよいそうで、「ワインのためにがんばるしかねえ！」ということになった。
I was fixing my tire and Gary caught up with me and helped me fix it. He was also in good condition today and we decided to reach the town to have wine.

そしてトランキーロに到着したのは夜の8時。朝9時に出たので11時間。とっても疲れたのでこの日はコテージに泊まることに。
ビールとワインを買い込んで晩酌を。
We arrived to Tranquilo at 8pm. 11hours after I left. We were so tired that we decided to stay in a cabin.

寝室2つにプライベートのバストイレとキッチン、暖炉。なんという贅沢。しかも、な、なんとバスタブがあった！のでいつぶりかわからないお風呂！！に入り、幸せ気分でぬくぬくと眠りにつきました。
two bedrooms with private bathrooms and a kitchen, and a fireplace. And even a bathtub!! I was so happy to take a "bath" for the first time in months.
Day 204-205 Coyhaique
コジャイケまで約40km。途中でいい滝を見つけたので、朝ごはんを食べたばかりなのにまた食べる。
40km to Coyhaique. I found a nice waterfall so I ate again after my breakfast.
コジャイケに着き、お腹が空いたのでカフェでケーキを食べ、隣のパン屋さんでパンを買った。今までチリで食べたパンの中で一番美味しかった。翌日の分を買ったつもりだったのに店の前ですべてなくなる不思議。
I arrived in Coyhaique and had a cake and bought some bread. It was supposed to be for the next day but somehow disappeared in front of the bakery.
食べてばっかりだなわたし。チャリダーはお腹が減るのです。
Its surprising how much cyclists can eat.
ツルツルにすり減ったタイヤを交換しようと自転車やさんへ行くと、これからシエスタタイムだから夕方にまた来てくれと言われる。
そしてポールさんとこのみさんに紹介してもらったパーマカルチャーサイト、ミンガレグレへ。キャンプもあると聞いたのでそこで泊まろうと思って坂を登っていると、一台の車が通りかかる。それがお二人の友人のマグダさんだった。
「話はポールから聞いてるわ。うちに泊まっていいわよ。部屋は用意してあるわ」
なんとも思いがけないありがたいお言葉に甘えて泊まらせていただくことにした。
とても素敵なお宅で、リビングには立派なロケットストーブとヒートベンチが。
I went to a permaculture site "Mingalegre" which Paul and Konomi introduced me.
I heard there was a campsite, but when I was pushing my bike uphill, a car stopped by and that was their friend, Magda.
"Paul told me about you. You can stay at my house."
I was expecting to camp, so I was so happy with her kind offer.

夕方再び自転車やさんに向かい、タイヤを交換してもらっている間に買い出しへ。
i went to the town to change my worn out tire.
つるんつるんになってしまったタイヤを交換。これで砂利道もグイグイ進める！はず…I changed my tires which has been worn out!!
そして戻ってくるときれいなお姉さんがわたしを待っていた。
「これから友達のサーカスがあるんだけど、よかったら一緒にどう？」
きれいなお姉さんにナンパされました。せっかくなのでついていくことに。
しかし始まる時間を勘違いしていたようで、少し時間があったので彼女（ベレン）行きつけのお店へ。クラフトビールと石釜ピザがおいしい。
When I came back, a beautiful girl was waiting for me.
"I'm going to my friend's circus do you want to join me?"
we still had time si went to have a beer and pizza, but we forgot about the time and ending up missing the circus. I'm sorry Belen...
コジャイケできれいなおねえさんにナンパされました。クラフトビールとピザおいしい！！Enjoying yummy craft beer and pizza in Coyhaique!!!
ベレンも旅好きらしく、今度はチャリ旅がしたいそう。話していたらあっという間に時間が過ぎて気づけばサーカスが始まっていた。そして会場に戻ったがすでに満席で結局入れず。。ごめんよベレン。。
サーカスは諦め、ベレン行きつけのバーへ。この日は朗読ナイトだったようで、サングリアを飲みながらポエムを聞くというなかなか面白い空間だった。（スペイン語のポエムは何ひとつ理解できなかったけど。）
We went to a bar. It was a poem night and we listened to the poem drinking sangria. It was interesting though I couldn't understand the Spanish poem.
本当はコジャイケには一泊の予定だったけど、せっかくなのでもう一泊させてもらうことにした。そしてお礼にお昼ご飯を作ることに。
i decided to stay one more night in Coyhaique, and cooked some Japanese food for lunch. I'm glad that everyone enjoyed it.
みんな喜んでくれてよかった。
そのあとは畑や家を案内してもらった。コブハウス、グラスウォール、ソーラーシャワー、コンポストトイレ。どれも手作り感はありながらもとても美しいデザインで素敵だった。
After that they showed me around their houses and gardens. Cob houses, glass bottle walls, solar showers and composting toilets. Everything was handmade and in beautiful designs.
畑にはハーブがたくさん。マーティンの奥さんはハーブの使い手のようで、手作りの石鹸やバームも見せてくれた。お昼に持ってきてくれたサラダにもたくさんのエディブルフラワーやハーブが入っていてとてもおいしかった。
many kinds of herbs in in the garden. Handmade soap and berms made from the herbs as well.
堆肥作りのお手伝いもさせてもらった。刈った草、牛糞、土を積み上げて温室で寝かせて発酵させる。竹の支柱でできた温室もすてき。
I helped making compost too. The bamboo poles for the greenhouse is also nice.
夕方はホームセンターに買い出しへ。同じく30ドルだけど良さげなテントがあったので買った。
これで雨も大丈夫なはず。。
i went to the hardware store and got a new tent. I hope it's more torrelant for rain.
帰ってきてから折り紙や書道をした。
マグダにもっといればいいのにと言ってもらってありがたいけど、少し先を急がねばならぬのです。ざんねん。。
短い間だったけど素敵な時間を過ごさせてもらったみなさんに感謝♡
i showed how to make origami and Japanese calligraphy. Magda told me I could stay longer, and I wish I could, but I have a reason that I have to hurry a bit.

Day 202-203 Careterra Austral #3 La Junta to Coyhaique

ラフンタまで北上した道を引き返して再び南へ向かう。プユワピから先は13-17時まで通行止めなので、13時前に抜けようと思っていたのだが、昨夜から降り出した雨は朝になってもなかなか止まず、だらだらしてたら11時になってしまった。
I headed back from La Junta and headed south. I tried to leave early to get through before the road construction hour starts, but it was raining from last night and I ended up leaving around noon.
途中でシスター2人のトラックに拾ってもらって20kmほどワープ。時速100kmで飛ばす暴走シスターズだった。
しかしそのあとはなかなか進まず、13時までに抜けるのは諦めた。途中でリヤカーを引いて歩いているドイツ人に出会った。自転車でも大変なのに歩くなんてすごいなあと尊敬。そういえばポールの言葉で印象的だったのが、「みんななぜそんなに目的地へ急ぐのか。そこにたどり着くまでの過程が大事なのに。」という言葉。自転車で走っていると一日中が「過程」なのでそれはよく分かる。でも本当は自転車でも早すぎるのかもしれない。25年間世界中を歩き回ってきたポールの言葉だからこそとても説得力がある。
A pickup truck picked me up. They were sisters, and they were driving so fast like a roller coaster, and took me 20km. After that I couldn't get a ride so I gave up and rode to Puyuhuapi. I met a guy from Germany who was walking. I was impressed because it's even hard for bikes. I remembered Paul's words, "Why does everyone want to hurry to the destination? The process is more important." I understand that because biking is mostly the process. But sometimes I feel that maybe even biking is too fast.
（ちなみに後日、ドイツ人の彼は歩くのに疲れてチャリを買ったと聞いて爆笑した）
It was funny to know that after few days, he actually got tired walking and bought a bike.
プユワピに2:30頃着く。お腹が空いていたのだがシエスタでほとんどの店が閉まっていて、やっと空いてる店を見つけてメラルーサという白身魚の唐揚げ＋フライドポテト＋ビールという超高カロリーな昼ごはんを食べた。こういうのが罪悪感なく食べられるのが自転車旅のいいところです。
I arrived in Puyuhuapi and had lunch. Fried fish with French fries and beer. The good thing about biking is that you don't have to worry about eating too much.
4時頃町を出てしばらく進むと予想通り道が封鎖されていて、車が並んでいた。この先は山道な上にけっこうな悪路なので乗せてほしいとお願いするとフランス人夫婦が快くOKしてくれた。ご主人はカメラマンで、世界中の人の写真を撮って周っているらしく、撮らせてくれと頼まれた。その際にいつも3つの質問をするそうだ。人生における最大のギフトは何か？幸せだと感じるのはどんな時か？死ぬまでにやりたいことは何か？
そして印象的だったのは、今まで聞いてきた答えの中め一番多いキーワードが「シェア」だということ。人は誰かと分かち合うことで幸せを感じるのだ。
競争社会では誰かを蹴落とすことで幸せを手に入れる。つまり一握りの人しか幸せになれない。でも、シェアすることによって幸せになるのならば、みんなが幸せになれる可能性がある。
道中何度か停まってドローンを飛ばして撮影していたりして、見ていて楽しかった。奥さんのナタリーもとても気の利くやさしい人だった。そして別れ際なんとまたしてもおこづかいをいただいてしまった。乗せていただいただけでもありがたいのに本当にすみません。
I left the town and went up the hill, where there were cars waiting for the construction to finish.
A French couple gave me a ride. They were so nice and the husband Tibo was a photographer, and he is going around the world to take photos of people. He asked to take my picture, and he asked me three questions which he always asks. "What was the biggest gift in your life?" "What makes you feel happy?" "What do you want to do in the rest of your life?"
it was interesting to hear that when he asks these questions, most people's answer is "sharing". People feel happy when they share.
Only few people can be happy in the competitive society, but everyone has a chance to be happy by sharing.
When I got off at the town, they gave me some pocket money again... What a surprise.
マニワレスにはcasa de ciclistaがあるという噂だったのだか、行ってみるとすでにオーナーの方は引っ越していて今はないらししい。仕方がないので近くのキャンプ場へ行くと、なんとチャリダーが8人もいた。そしてその中にはペルーで出会ったデニスやドイツ人夫婦も。74歳のアメリカ人チャリダーは「新しいひざ」でチャリに乗っているらしい。「自転車とおそろいのチタニウム製だ」と自慢していて笑った。
I arrived to Villa Manihuales, where I heard there is a Casa de Ciclista, but unfortunately there isn't anymore. So I went into a campsite nearby and met eight cyclists there, including the German couple and Denis, who I biked together in Peru. An 74 old year Cyclist from the US was biking with his "new knees". It was funny because he said his knees are titanium so that it matches his bike.

10時前に出発したが、スーパーに寄ったり壊れた荷台のボルトを結束バンドで応急処置したりしてたら10:30になってしまった。次の町で溶接してもらわないと。
I need to weld my bike at the next town.
道は舗装路だが、アップダウンが多くてなかなか進まない。2:30時点で45km。やっと半分か。。と思ってたところにキャンプ場。一旦スルーしかけたけど、"organic vegetables" "homemade bread"という看板がどうしても気になって引き返す。
The roads are paved but with many hills, and I could only do 45km. I saw a camping with the sign "organic vegetables" "homemade bread" and I went in.
オーナーのナチョが農業ツアーをしてくれた。主にハウスでレタスを作っているのだけど、ナメクジ対策に畝の手前に木の板を置き、日陰を作ることでナメクジがそこに集まり、退治するという方法や、土をふるう網、植え穴を開ける道具などがおもしろかった。
The owner Nacho gave me a tour. They are growing lettuce in the greenhouses.
夕方にはマテレッスン。マテというのはガウチョ（カウボーイ）の文化で、彼らは元々インディアンから取り入れたらしい。基本的には朝と夕方の2回、＋お客さんが来た時にみんなで集まってひとつの器を回しながら話すのだが、細かい決まりがいろいろある。
まずは淹れ方。熱湯を入れると葉っぱが焼けて苦味が出るため、少し冷ましたお湯（80°Cぐらい？）を使う。はじめの一杯はサーバーが味見して吐き捨てる。味が安定したら時計周りに回していく。器を受け取る時も返す時も「ありがとう」と言ってはいけない。ありがとう＝もうけっこうです、の意味になるので最後に器を返す時に言う。
器を返さずにあまり長いこと喋っていたりすると、「マテはマイクじゃないぞ」と誰かが暗示する。細かい決まりがいろいろあることとか、直接的ではなくて暗喩的に話すところは日本の茶道や日本文化に近いと感じた。
After that he gave me a Mate lesson. It was interesting to hear all the stories and the metaphors they use.
キッチンも広くてキレイなので久しぶりに料理欲が沸き、さばの煮付け、味噌汁、たきこみごはんを作る。
ごはんを食べていたらナチョがやってきてギターを弾き始める。その流れでわたしも弾くことになり、途中から奥さんも加わり、さらにはわたしの鼻笛も交えてセッション。鼻笛とても役に立ってるよ、しょうちゃん。結局2-3時間歌っていた。
They had a nice kitchen so I cooked Japanese food for myself.
When I was eating, Nacho came in and started to play the guitar. I ended up joining and having session with my nose flute.
ちなみにこの家は全部手作りらしい。虫こぶを利用したランプやドアの装飾、廃材を利用したテーブルやドアなどがかわいくて工夫がいっぱい。ナチョ曰く、森の中で虫こぶのある木を見つけた時にすでに頭の中でデザインが出来上がっているそう。なんでも自分で作っちゃうのってすごいよなあ。そういう人にわたしもなりたい。
He told me that he built this house and all the furniture a as well. I liked the lights which were made from tree aneurysms. I really admire people who can make everything by themselves, and want to be like that.
Day 200-201 Careterra Austral #2 La Junta
南に向かっていたはずのわたしがなぜか北に向かって大逆走。それはどうしても会いたい人がいたからなのです。ラフンタという村でサステイナブルな暮らしをされているポールさん&このみさんに会いに行くためです。
I headed to the opposite direction, heading north, because I had people that I wanted to meet. Paul and Konimi, who are living a sustainable life in La Junta.
以前からパタゴニアに行くなら是非訪ねてみて、といろんな方に教えていただいていたのに、計画性のないわたしは近くなってから場所とか調べよう、とか思っているうちに気づけばプエルトシスネスに着いてしまった。そして調べてみたら、あれ、逆方向だったー。ということで120kmくらい逆走するハメになったのです。まぬけです。そんなわたしの無計画さゆえに直前の連絡になってしまったにも関わらず、快くオッケーしていただいたこのみさん&ポールさんに心から感謝です。
Many of my friends told me to visit them, but I realized that I've came too south after I arrived in Patagonia, so I had to go back for 120km. I feel so thankful for Paul and Konomi who accepted me on such short notice.
このみさんからいただいていた道順案内のメールで「…右手にあるフェンスを越えて、フェンス沿いに上がって来てください」の「越えて」という部分になんとなくいやな予感はしていたのだけど、やはりそういうことでしたか。写真だと分かりづらいですが自転車を顔の高さまであるフェンスに対して水平に持ち上げるのは、か弱いわたしにはなかなか至難の技でした。
I had a bad feeling when I saw the directions from Konomi, saying "come over the fence"
It was very hard for a powerless girl like me to go over the fence which was about the height of myself with my bike.
フェンスと格闘し、急な坂を登ると、白いドームと緑の屋根が見えてくる。
ちなみにこの日はなんとこのみさんのお誕生日だったので、道すがらきれいなお花を探して花束を作っていったのだけど、萎れてしまった上にほとんどがお庭に咲いているのと同じ花でした。てへ
After climbing the fence and a steep hill, you can see a white dome and a green roof.
This day was Konomi's birthday, so I tried to find some flowers on the way to make a small bouquet, but I found out that she has the same flowers in her garden.
早速このみさんに敷地内を案内してもらいました。

温室1
壁がアースバッグ（土嚢袋に土を詰めて積み上げる）でできていて、そこに蓄熱されるそう。そして作物の下には木が埋まっている。
Green house with earth bag walls. The heat is stored into the walls during the day and released at night.
Wood is buried under the crops.
これはフーゲルカルチャーという森を模した手法で、菌糸や微生物の働きで木が徐々に分解されていくので、長きにわたって窒素などの養分源となり、さらにスポンジのようになった木は保水力も高いために水やりも少なくて済むのだとか。
This is a method called hugelkultur, which imitates the forest. The wood decomposes gradually as it becomes a source of nutrition, and it also keeps moisture that you don't need to water the crops so often.
温室2
ボリビアのワリピニ（walipini アイマーラ語で暖かい空間の意）を参考にし、斜面を利用した地下温室。穴掘りをしたことがある方ならこの大きさの穴を全て人力で掘るのがどれほど大変かわかるでしょう。凄まじいです。
キュウリやトマトなどの夏野菜が育っていました。
This greenhouse is built underground, like a walipini in Bolivia. If you have ever dug earth by yourself, you can imagine how much work it is to dig this all by hand.
この土地は2007年にポールさんとこのみさんが購入した当初は牧草地で、木は一本も生えていなかったらしい。ポールさんは25年間世界中を歩き回り、木を植えてきた方。その知見を活かして、敷地内に1200本もの木を植樹したそう。大きな木は影ができることを気にしなくていい南側に（ここは南半球なので北が日当たりがいい）、眺めのいい南西には景観を邪魔しないカラフルな木を、というように大まかなデザインはするものの、あくまで森のように無秩序に植えた。西側はあえて何もせずに放置していたら予想通り元の植生が回復してきたそう。
This place used to be a pasture, and no single tree when they bought this property in 2007. Paul is a specialist who walked all over the world for 40 years, planting trees, so he planted 1200 trees in this area. The trees were planted randomly, with only a rough design -- such as tall trees in the south so that they don't have to worry about the shade, and colorful trees in front of their house that doesn't bother the view. The west side was kept as it was to see what happens, and now the original vegetation is starting to come back.
そのあとは草刈りのお手伝いを。

I helped cutting the weeds.
草は全て手刈り。とても手刈りでやるような面積ではないのに、なぜ機械を使わないのか、と尋ねると、
「以前草刈機を使っていたこともあったけど、ボランティアの子が誤って木を切ってしまってね。木というのはとても大事なんだ。だからそれからは手でやることにした。手で刈るとその土地の地形のことがよくわかるし、細かな変化にも気がつく。まあ、草刈機高かったんだけど。。」
と笑うポール氏。
草刈りは瞑想だ、とも言っていた。
They do the grass cutting all by hand. Their property is so vast, so I asked why they don't use a machine.
"We have a machine and we used to use it, but one of the volunteers cut down a tree by mistake. Trees are very important for us, so we decided to do it by hand. It takes more time, but you can learn more about the land and notice the changes. Well, the machine was
expensive though..."
刈った草はマルチに。草はどんどん生えてくるのでマルチ仕放題。
The grass is used for multing.
スペイン製の鎌がかっこいい。

家の窓からは美しい山並みが見渡せる。家を建てる時にまずこの向きに大きな窓を作ることを決めたそう。だから家は小さくても景色は壮大。
Beautiful view from the window of their house. They first decided to built a big window on this direction. The house is small, but the view is vast.
この家の周りには絵のように半径3m部分にビニールが埋められている。こうすることでその範囲の地下部分は年を追うごとに乾いていき、熱を蓄える。家の中の床はすき間が空いていて、寒い冬の日には床下に蓄えられた熱が下から上がってきて暖まるという仕組み。昨年は外気温-5℃の時も室内は12℃だったそう。アースバッグでできた分厚い壁も断熱効果が高いので、薪ストーブを焚けばすぐに部屋が暖まるし、逆に夏の暑い日も部屋の中は涼しい。
さらに、屋根の上に降った雨はビニールをつたって池へと流れ込む。つまり見えない雨樋の役割も果たしているのだ。（ちなみに食器洗いや手洗いは雨水で、飲料水は川から汲んできた水を使っている）
A plastic sheet is buried underground to make the soil dry. In this way, the ground gets drier and drier every year, and stores heat. The floor has gaps so when it gets cold, the heat comes from the ground. The thick earth bag walls also work as a insulation, so it's easy to heat with wood stoves and keep the heat at winter, but it also remains cool during summertime even when it's hot outside.
The roof water also flows over the plastic sheets and goes into the pond. They use rain water for washing and river water for drinking.
その池がまた大事な役割を果たしている。敷地内には大小合わせて13の池があり、貴重な天水を集めている。渇水時の水供給源としてはもちろん、生き物の住処としても重要で、この辺りでは見られなくなっていたカエル、ハチ、トンボ、ツバメなどがここ数年で戻ってきて、年々増えているそう。そしてここから山へと広がっていくので、この場所が地域全体を豊かにしている。特にカエルは蚊を食べてくれるので大切にされている。
穴を掘ってビニールを敷き、雨乞いをするだけ、という至って安くてシンプルな造り。一番古い池は7歳だけど、まだおもらしはしてないそう。
掘った土はアースバッグやフーゲルカルチャーに利用するので無駄がない。
池のそばではいちごがよく育っていました。おいしくいただきました。
The pond plays many important rolls. There are 13 ponds, and they work well not only as a water source in the dry season, but also as a habitat for many species. Frogs, bees, dragonflies weren't here at first, but they came back and now they are increasing every year. They are nourishing the whole area.
The frogs eat mosquitos so they don't have mosquitos here.
Making ponds are so easy. Dig a hole, put a plastic sheet, and pray for the rain. The soil is used for earth bags or hugelkultur.
Strawberries grow well beside the pond. They were yummy.
このみさんお手製のサラダとパン。ナスタチウムや青い花（名前忘れてしまった）などのエディブルフラワーは見た目も味も良くて最高。チロエ島原産のジャガイモもカラフルで美しい。野生に近いからかとても強いそう。ねっとりとしたさつまいものような食感。
おいしいご飯をいただきながら、おふたりにいろんなお話を伺った。
Konomi made a beautiful and tasty salad with edible flowers. The colorful potatoes are from Chiloe, and they are very strong.
ここ数年でアウストラル街道は変わったと言う。引っ越してきた2007年はまだ道は狭くて未舗装だったため、主な交通手段は馬で、スーパーの前にはいつも買い物客の馬が停まっていた。しかし2-3年前に道が舗装されてからは、道路工事でお金に余裕が出たことも手伝って車を持つ人が一気に増えたそう。道路状況がよくなったことによって、急ぐ必要もないのにスピードを出す車も増え、それまで見られなかったロードキルが多発しているよう。
アウストラル街道はあと数年のうちに全面舗装路になる。舗装路は走りやすいけど、それと引き換えに失うものもあるということを忘れてはいけない。わたしも舗装路ヒャッホーーイ！と単純に喜んでいる場合ではない。
Carretera Austral is changing rapidly in the last few years. When they first moved here, the road was very narrow and unpaved, so the main transportation was horses. You could see horses parked in front of the supermarkets. The road was paved few years ago, and more people could afford to buy a car with the construction money. Paved roads are easy to drive, but the cars drive so fast that now there are many road kills which never happened before.
Carettera Austral would be totally paved in few years, but we can't forget that we have a price for convenience.
ちなみにわたしが驚いたのは、ポールさんとこのみさんは車を持っていないということ。都会ならまだしも、田舎暮らしの必須アイテムナンバーワンだと思っていたのでびっくり。でもここは村からも徒歩圏内だし、歩いていると知り合いが拾ってくれたり、重いものを買った時はトラックを持っている人にお願いしたり、町の道具屋さんが無料で送迎してくれたりするそうなので、特に困らないと言う。
I was surprised that Paul and Konomi doesn't have a car. I thought cars were necessary to live in the countryside. They live in a walking distance from the town, and when they buy heavy things, they ask their friends to help, or use a free service from the hardware store.
気候変動もここ数年で著しい。春と秋がなくなり、夏から一気に冬がくるようなかんじ。昨年は半年近くもほとんど雨が降らず、川が干上がり、深刻な水不足に悩まされたそう。でもそれがきっかけで政府も住民も危機感が高まり、渇水対策としてポールさんたちの家を見学に来る人たちが増えた。そしてお偉い政府関係者や建築家が視察に来て、あまりのシンプルさに驚いて帰っていくとポールさんは笑っていた。
The climate change is also a big issue this last few years. Now the summer and winter comes so suddenly that they don't have spring and autumn. They had no rain for six months last year, and the rivers dried up. After this, the government and the people got more aware about conserving water, and many people came to their house to learn how to make ponds.
チリはとても住みやすそうな国。移民も土地の購入も簡単だし、何かやりたいプロジェクトがあれば政府は補助金をバンバンつけてくれる。1200本の苗木も全てタダでもらったそう。病院もタダ、州によっては出産や学校もタダ。なんだか夢のような話だなあ。
特にここパタゴニアは60年ぐらい前の開拓者たちが切り拓いた土地だから、パイオニア精神が強く、口先だけの人は信用されず、実行してはじめて認められるそう。とてもいいカルチャーだと思いました。
Chile seems like a very nice place to live. Easy to immigrate and buy land, and the government is very helpful and gives you money for new projects. The hospitals and education is free.
土地探しの話も面白かった。お二人はなんと真冬のパタゴニアを500kmにわたって土地を探し回ったそう。週に1本しかバスがないため何日も足止めを食らったこともあったそう。なぜわざわざ冬に土地を探したのか、と聞くと
「たまたまそのタイミングに来たから。でも結果的に冬に探してよかった。雪がどの程度積もるのか、陽当たりはどんな具合なのかがよくわかる。もしかしたら夏に来て素敵な場所でも冬は全く日が当たらないかもしれない。だから人にも冬に土地探しをすることを勧める」
靴も夕方に買ったほうがいい（足が浮腫んでるから）のと一緒で、一番厳しい状態を知ることで、あとから「こんなはずじゃなかった」となることを回避できる。目から鱗だった。
Their stories for finding places were also interesting. They came to Patagonia in winter, and it was hard because sometimes there are only one bus a week. I asked them why did they choose such a harsh season, and Paul's answer was very interesting.
"It was just because we arrived in that season, but I'm glad we did it in winter because you can see how much snow is and how much sun light is available during the day. I recommend people to find places in winter."
I never thought about that, but it makes sense to know the worst condition before buying.

I enjoyed listening to their stories, and talking about our lives and the difference between Japan and other countries.
ちなみにフェンスは近所の方がタイミング良く直してくれたそうで、帰る時は越えずにすみました。ありがとう、近所の方。
The fence was fixed by their neighbors, so it was much easy to go out. Thank you mr.neighbor.

Day 198-199 Careterra Austral #1 Puerto Cisness to Puyuhuapi
20時間のフェリーを経てプエルトシスネスに到着したのは夜の8時。
After 20 hours sailing, I finally arrived in Puerto Cisnes.
アウストラル街道には各村に地ビールがありますよ、との情報をいただいたからには試さないわけにはいかないわけで、お店を見つけてゲット。
村から4km離れた無料キャンプ場へ。無料なのにトイレもキレイだし、屋根付きのBBQ台もある。わたしのテントは雨非対応なので屋根の下に張らせてもらった。
I went to a free campsite.
I camped under a roof because my tent is not water resistant.
南に来たのと夏至が近づいているのでずいぶんと日が長くなった。10時近いのにまだ明るい。
The day became very long now. It's light until 10pm.
ちなみにシスネスビールはペールエールでございます。わたしのイメージにぴったりの爽やかな味です。うまし。
Cisness beer is Pale Ale.

ちなみにここでも隣のブースでは深夜から宴が始まり、朝までドンチャンしてました。

Beautiful morning.
まだアウストラル街道に入っていないのに既に美しい。空気がとてつもなくおいしい。鳥のさえずりが聞こえる。空、海、川、湖、山。次々と現れる絶景に100mおきに立ち止まって写真を撮りたくなる。なかなか進まない。
The air is so fresh and the colors of the sky, sea, rivers, lakes, mountains are just amazing. It's hard to move forward because you want to take pictures every 100m.
ペルーで出会ったドイツ人チャリダー夫婦と再会。
I met the German couple whom I met in Peru.

本日の目的地、プユワピ直前で道路工事があり、13-17時まで閉鎖されていたので1時間ぐらい待った。
やたらと絡んでくる犬。南米に入ってから犬には追いかけられるか吠えられるかばかりなので犬嫌いになりつつあったけど、こういうのがたまにいるから困るんですよね。かわいいやつめ。
The road was closed from 1-5pm due to the road construction, so I waited for about an hour.
A dog came to play with me.
しばらく進むとまた道路が閉鎖。
お姉さん「15-20分ぐらい待ってね」
…
20分後
「20分待ってね」
…
20分後
「あと20分ね」
…
結局1時間待ちました。これがチリアンタイムです。
でも待ってる間、お菓子とジュースをくれたり、いろいろ談笑したりしてなかなか楽しかった。

So I ended up waiting for an hour. It's Chilean time.
But I kind of enjoyed chatting with the construction guys. They gave me some snacks too.
プユワピに着き、川の側でキャンプ。ここの地ビールはなんと3種類。
I arrived in Puyuhuapi and camped in front of the river. There are three kinds of local beer here.
あーこういうのいいなあ。と感慨にふけっていると、工事現場のおじさんがやってきて何かいってる。どうやらここは深夜になると川の水位が上がって浸水するから移動した方がいいとのこと。川はかなり下だから半信半疑だったけど、おじさんを信じて移動。（翌朝見たら濡れていたので移動してよかった）おじさんはそのあと温かいお茶とお菓子とジュースをくれた。この国にはいい人しかいないのだろうか。
A man came and told me that this place would be under water at midnight, so I moved. He also gave me hot tea and cookies. I wonder if there ate only nice people in this country.
