Day 239-243 Punta Arenas
プンタアレーナスでダラダラした日々を過ごす。泊まっていたアニータというホステルの人たちは、これまで泊まったホステルの中でも一二を争うぐらい無愛想で、交わした会話と言えば「金」とか「掃除するからどいて」とか、サービス業としてはいかがなものかと思うこともあったが、逆にそれが新鮮で面白かったのと設備が快適で居心地が良かったので、明日出ていく、と言いながらもう一泊、もう一泊、と結局4泊もしてしまった。
The people in hostel Anita were definitely one of the most unfriendly people I've ever met in South America, and all the conversations I had was like "money" or "go back to your room (because I want to clean)". But it was kind of funny and somehow comfortable, so I ended up staying there for 5days.
オイギンスで会ったオーストラリア人、ルークと街でばったり会う。彼は折りたたみのカヤックを背負って、陸上も水上も全て自力で移動している超人。カラファテからはバスに乗ったらしいけど。宿を探していたのでそのまま我々の宿に連れて行った。
I encountered Luke, a guy from Australia who is carrying a potable kayak and does everything by manpower. I met him in O'Higgins. He was looking for a place to stay, so I took him to our hostel.
プンタアレーナスはなかなか大きな街で、スーパーも比較的安く、メニューという本日の定食みたいなのを置いてる店も多くて、なんだかペルーを彷彿とさせた。まあ値段はペルーの5倍ぐらいだけど。お昼は毎日のように違うレストランでメニューを食べた。久しぶりにショッピングなんぞもしてしまった。
Punta Arenas is a quite big town, with relatively cheap supermarkets, and restaurants which has "menu for the day". It reminded me of Peru, although is much more expensive. We had lunch at different restaurants. I also did "shopping".
毎日交互に夕飯を作る。アンドレアのシチューもルークのトルティージャもおいしかったなあ。人が作ってくれるごはんっておいしいなあ。
We took turns to cook dinner. Andrea's stew and Luke's tortilla was yummy. It's so nice to eat something that someone cooked.
3日目の夜にエネイダとラファ（わたしの命の恩人Day 220-221 Christmas in El Chalten - まやたろの体当たりチャリンコ日記〜南北アメリカ自転車縦断〜）がやってきた。実は彼らとここで会う約束をしていたのだが、なかなかやってこないので何かあったのかしら、もしくは嫌われたのかしら、とアンドレアとヤキモキしていたので2人との再会は一層嬉しかった。彼らは我々があきらめた海沿いのダートの方を走ったらしい。しかし悪天候でなかなか過酷な旅路だったよう。そしてペンギンはいなかったそう。アンドレアとあっち行かなくてよかったね、と改めて胸をなでおろした。
On the third night, Eneida and Rafa (who saved my lifeDay 220-221 Christmas in El Chalten - まやたろの体当たりチャリンコ日記〜南北アメリカ自転車縦断〜) arrived. We were planning to meet them here, but were a bit worried because they didn't show up, so we were so happy to see them again.They went through the coast route that we gave up, but had a hard time with the weather. Andrea and I were glad we didn't go that way.
今後の予定を立てるのに、一日中引きこもって飛行機のチケットや滞在場所を調べていたのだが、とてつもなく疲れた。自転車で走っている時とは全く違う疲れ。精神的にすごく落ち込む。もう二度とオフィスレディーには戻れないな、と再認識せざるを得なかった。まあ元から無理だったんですけどね。
I was staying in the hostel all day trying to book flights and arrange the places to stay, and I was so tired. More tired than when I'm biking. I'm sure that I can't go back to office work anymore.
みんなは2日後のフェリー乗るらしいが、わたしはこれ以上引きこもっていると病んでしまいそうなので一足先にフエゴ島向かうことにする。
Everyone else is going to stay more, but I will feel depressed so I'm going to get on my bike.
宿の人もさすがに4日もいると徐々に心を開いてくれて、しきりにわたしやアンドレアの名前を呼んだり、わたしたちいいかんじよね、と言い出す。なんだただのツンデレか。
It was so funny that the people in the hostel started to call me and Andreas name, and said we are in good relationship.
宿の人情報でビールフェスティバルへ。80種類ぐらいのビールが味わえるとか。チョリパン（チョリソーをパンにはさんだもの）とかモテコンヒージョ（麦と桃のドリンク）とかビールとか。こういう都会っぽいことするの久しぶりだよね、とはしゃぐ我々。
They told us that there is a beer festival, so we went to check it out. Choripan, Mote con husillo, and beer. It has been a while since we had done such a "city" event.
鉄の馬に乗る。
一ヶ月後、エネイダとラファはコロンビアへ、アンドレアとスティーブはスコットランドへ、ルークはオーストラリアへ、そしてわたしはキューバへ。みんな違う大陸にいる。そう考えると今ここで彼らといることは奇跡でしかない。すべては出会いとタイミング。旅は人生そのものだ。
At the time of next month, Eneida and Rafa will be in Colombia, Andrea and Steve in Scottland, Luke in Australia, and me in Cuba. It's such a miracle that we are here together now. ncountering and timing matters. Traveling is a perfect picture of life.
Day 236-238 Puerto Natales to Punta Arenas
1/8 Sun
マットたちは早朝のバスでカラファテへ向かったが、わたしはダラダラして結局11:30に出発。チェックアウトの時間を過ぎていたようで、申し訳なさそうに入ってきた管理人さん。ごめんなさい。管理人さんたちは親切でとてもいい宿でした。
Matt and Jessica left early to take the bus, but I was so slow and I left at 11:30.
はじめの10kmちょいは気乗りせずにダラダラ走っていたが、途中からだんだん追い風気味になり、調子が出てきた。道中韓国人カップルに出会う。シアトルから1年9ヶ月かけて走ってきたらしい。すごいなあ。
I met a couple from Korea. They started in Seattle 1 year and 9 months ago, and came all the way. Very impressive.
バス停でお昼を食べる。窓が割れているので風通しがいい。
今日の道はゆるやかでラクチン。風も強すぎずいいかんじ。100km地点のMollo Chicoという小さな村の警察署に聞くと向かいのガレージに泊まっていいとのこと。先客あり！と思いきや、クリスマスをエルチャルテンで共に過ごしたアンドレアとスティーブだった。
Easy way today. Not many hills. We came 100km to Mollo Chico, and asked the police where we can stay. He pointed out the garage across the street, where we found Andrea and Steve, the Scottish couple that I spent Christmas together.
ご飯を作っていたら途中で鍋をひっくり返してしまい、半分くらい地面に食べられてしまうという悲しい事件が起きたのだけど、ヨニとティビ（韓国人カップル）が仏の心でわたしを招いてごはんをシェアしてくれた。やさしい。。ありがとう。久しぶりのアジアの味。幸せじゃー。
I was cooking dinner when I tipped my pot and fed the ground... But Yoni and Tivi, the Korean, were so nice that they shared their meals. Nice Asian food!!
1/9 Mon
風を避けるために8時前に出発。アンドレアとスティーブにお供させてもらうことにした。アンドレアと話しながら走るのはとても楽しかった。特に、彼女たちが道中お世話になったおじさんが教えてくれたというパタゴニアの表現が面白かった。
「エンパナーダが欲しいか？」＝ゲンコツ食らわせるぞ（エンパナーダがゲンコツの形に似ているから）とか
「パンパ」＝退屈 （パンパは木も生えないだだっ広い平原）とか
地元の人もパンパが退屈だと思っているのがなんだかおかしかった。
I left with Andrea and Steve. We left before 8am, trying to avoid the wind.
It was so fun talking with Andrea on the way because she is so funny. She taught me about the story of the old man who they met on the way, which had interesting expressions, such as,
"Do you want an empanada?" =Do you want a punch? (because empanadas look like the fist.)
"Pampa"=boring (because pampa is a boring scenery with no trees.)
It was interesting to find out that the locals also think that pampa is boring.
人と走るのはひとりで走るのとまったく違う発見や楽しさがある。どちらも好きだ。
Biking with someone is always different from biking alone. I like both.
昼前にTehuelcheという村に着く。小さな村なのに図書館やバス停がやたら立派で、お金が有り余っているのだろうか。
We arrived inTehuelche. It's a small town, but all the facilities were so new and clean. I wonder why.
この先そのまま高速を走るか、迂回してダートを海沿いに走るか。海沿いの道はペンギンが見られるかもしれないという。
結論を先送りしたまま分岐点へ着くと、ダート方向から激しい向い風が。スティーブは行きたそうだったけど、わたしとアンドレアは迷わず高速を選んだ。たしかにペンギンは見てみたいけど、パンク祭り必須のダートはもうイヤじゃ。。しかも向い風はきらいじゃ。。
There are two ways from here, continuing on the high way or take a detour on the gravel to bike the coast. There might be some penguins on the coast.
We couldn't decide until we came to the cross point, when a strong wind was blowing from the gravel road. Steve seemed that he wanted to go, but me and Andrea chose the high way. I'm not a big fan of dirt roads, especially with this tire. And I don't like headwind...
94km地点にガソリンスタンドがあり、そこで水を補給しようとしたのだが誰もいない。道向かいの農場のおじさんに頼んで水をもらった。なまりが強くて何を言ってるのかほとんど聞き取れなかったが、どうやらここにテントを張っていいよ、と言ってくれているようだ。ありがたくお言葉に甘えることにしたが、案内された場所はデコボコの地面と死んだ犬が。。スティーブとどこにテントを張ろうか顔を見合わせていると、別のお兄さんがやってきて、なんとベッドとストーブがある部屋を空けてくれた！しかも部屋に入った直後に、見計らったように土砂降りの雨が。ありがてえ。。
ちなみに死んだ犬はおじさんが一輪車で回収していったのだが、それを拾い上げて一輪車にボフッと積み込む様子がなんとも滑稽で思わず笑ってしまった。ごめんね犬。
There was a gas station at the 94km point, so we tried to ask for water, but we couldn't find anyone. There was a farm across the street, so we asked for water. The old man was kind but hard to understand with the strong accent, but it seemed that he was saying that we can camp here. We thanked him but the place he showed us was bumpy and there was a dead dog... Steve and I were trying to figure out where to put our tent, when another man came and opened a room with beds and a stove! And just after we went into the room, it became pouring. What a luck!
The old man collected the dead dog in a wheelbarrow, but the way he picked it up and through into the wheelbarrow was so funny that I couldn't stop laughing. Sorry dog...

Andrea rescued a Japanese boy and the Korean couple. Six cyclists!!
1/10 Tue
今朝も早めに出るが、風と雨がすごい。プンタアレナスまで50kmだったが、風のせいでやたら疲れる。
お昼に到着。久しぶりにこんな大きな街に来たので3人ともびびる。街に入ってからも目当てのキャンプ場まで5kmあった。残念ながらキャンプ場はいっぱいだったので代わりに別のホステルへ。
We left early again, but very strong wind and rain. It was only 50km to Punta Arenas, but it was so hard.
We arrived just before noon. I wonder when was the last city as big as this. There was still 5km to the campsite after we entered the town. Unfortunately, the campsite was full so we went to a different hostel.
市場でお昼を食べる。レストラン！ワイン！贅沢！
We had a great lunch at the mercado!
サーモンを買い、夜はアボカドサーモン、サラダ、ごはん、みそ汁。
We got some salmon for dinner.
しばらくここでのんびりします。ウシュアイアに向かう前にその後の予定を立てねば。
I'm going to stay here for a while. I have to make plans before I head to Ushuaia.
Day 234-235 Puerto Natales and Torres del Paine
トーレスデルパイネにいってきた。
本当は3泊4日のWトレックをする予定だったのだが、2016年10月からすべてのキャンプ場を事前予約していないとキャンプできない&無料キャンプ場は3ヶ月先までいっぱいというひどい状況なので、諦めて日帰りでメインのトーレスデルパイネだけ行くことにした。
朝7:30のバスに乗り、9:30に入り口へ。すでに長蛇の列が。30分ほど待ってようやく入場。ちなみにバスが往復で14000ペソ、入場料が21000ペソ。た、たけー。
マットもジェシカも速くて着いて行くのに必死だった。
コースタイム5時間のところを2時間半で頂上へ。
I wanted to do the W trek, but the system changed from this season that you have to book all the campsites in advance, and the free campsites were full until three months ahead. So we decided to go one day just to the Torres.
We took a bus at 7:30, and arrived to the entrance at 9:30. So many people in line. We waited for 30minutes and got in. It costs 14000pesos for the bus, and 21000pesos for the entrance fee. Expensive...!!
Matt and Jessica were so fast that I could barely catch up, and it took us only half of the course time to the top.

それにしてもフィッツロイと瓜二つだなあ。手前の湖といいツンツンした山といい。
It looks so similar to Fitz Roy. The lakes and the pointy mountains...
おやつを食べ、キャンプ場に寄ってお昼ご飯。（許可されたところでしかストーブを使えない）
We had snacks, and went down to the campsite to cook lunch.
下界に降りてきたのは17:30。なかなかバスが来なくてずっと待っていた。
We came down at 5:30. We were waiting for the bus for a long time.
トーレス、たしかにいいのだけど今シーズンからのこのひどいシステムととんでもない数のハイカー、そしてバカ高い料金を考えるとフィッツロイの方が断然おすすめです。全部無料だし。
でもふたりと一緒に行けて楽しかったです。
It is beautiful, but regarding all these complicated systems and so many hikers, and that it's so expensive, I would recommend Fitz Roy.
But it was so fun to join them!! Thanks :)

Day 230-233 El Calafate to Puerto Natales
1/2 Mon
プエルトナタレスまでフランス人カップルのナンスとアリックスにお供せてもらうことにした。
はじめの20kmぐらいは平らな舗装路で走りやすい。と思ってたらまたパンクした。どうやら前回の修理が甘かったみたい。2人に先に行ってもらい、お昼で合流した。
I joined the couple from France to go to Puerto Natales.
The first 20km was pretty flat, but I got a flat again. It was from the hole that I repaired the day before.
午後からはひたすらのぼりが10km以上。どんどん置いていかれるわたし。風も強くなってきて、終いには1cmぐりいの雹が降ってきて痛いのなんの。
After lunch it was all the way up for more than 10km. I was way behind them. Eventually, big bits of hail started falling and it was so painful that I couldn't stop screaming.
「イタイイタイ！やめて！！」と叫びながら走る。
目的地である95km地点の工事現場詰所にたどり着くと、既に3人のチャリダーが。
After 95km at the building of the road construction workers, there were already 3 other cyclists.
みんな南に向かっているそう。カレーを作って食べた。うまし。明日は未舗装路65km。風がいい向きに吹いてくれるといいのだけど、おそらく向かい風です。
Everyone is heading south. Tomorrow is a 65kn of gravel. I hope the wind blows in the right direction...

風が強くなる前に出ようと、7:30に出発。はじめの30kmはひたすら平らでまっすぐなパンパ（木も生えない不毛の地）で、風もなく退屈。下りで石とリム打ちしてまたパンクした。連日のパンクのおかげでだいぶ経験値が上がったとはたいえ、わたしはいつもパンク修理に30分ぐらいかかるのだが、ノンスは手際よく15分ぐらいで直してくれた。
We left at 7:30 to avoid the wind. The first 30km were flat straight boring pampa. I got a flat again when I went down and hit a rock. It usually takes me 30minutes to fix it, but Nons did it in 15minutes.
お昼を食べようと立ち寄った34km地点の農場のガウチョさんたちがとても親切で、キッチン付きの小屋を使わせてくれた。ありがたや。
We stopped by a farm to ask if we can eat lunch there, and the Gauchos were so nice that they let us use a cabin with a kitchen.
そこから後半30kmがもう本当にキツかった。風はどんどん強くなり、坂も増え、大きな石もゴロゴロしててなかなか進まない。今日の目的地は未舗装路の終わりにあるガソリンスタンドなのだが、途中ですれ違った車にあと何キロかと尋ねると、二本指を立てて「dos」と言ったのであと2kmか！と喜んだのも束の間、2kmを過ぎでも何もなく、のちのちdosでなくdose（=12）だったということに気付く。ややこしいったらありゃしない。
The last 30km was much more harder. More wind, more hills, more rocks... Today's destination is a gas station which is on the end of the gravel road, so we asked a driver who passed us how far it is. He stuck two fingers and said "dos" so we thought it was only two kilometers. But there was nothing after two or even ten. We found out he said "dose"(12). So confusing...
最後の10kmがめちゃくちゃキツかったけど、やっとの思いでたどり着いたガソリンスタンド？というか派出所？のポリスメンたちがとっても親切で、シャワーとキッチンを使わせてくれた。キャンプしていいよ、と場所を案内してくれたのだが、あまりに疲れていたのでこの床に寝かせてもらえませんかね、というとここはポリシアだからダメだけど隣に聞いてみる、ということで隣の建物にある部屋のベッドに寝かせていただけることになった。おまけに、まさに寝ようとするとよかったら夕飯もどうだと。もう夕飯は食べたし、歯磨きもしたしまさに夢の中に入り込む瞬間だったけど、食べ物のお誘いを断ったらバチが当たるというものでしょう。もちろん喜んでお受けしました。そして二回目の夕飯もペロリと1.5人前ほど完食。大変美味でございました。

ちなみにこの日いただいたチキンは庭を元気に駆け回っていたやつらしい。キッチンには魚もたくさんあり、それも目の前の川で釣ってきたとか。明日はグアナコ（ここら辺にたくさんいるリャマやアルパカの仲間、ただし野生）狩りに行くという話をしていた。ここから最寄りのスーパーまでは220kmあるので、必然的にそうなるのだろう。
お腹いっぱいで幸せ気分で眠りにつく。
1/4 Wed
朝起きるとなんと朝食まで用意してくれていた。ここはどこのホテルですか。
今日は朝から風が強い。宿の風速計は32m/sを指していた。しかも南西。我々が向かうのも南西。つまり思いっきり向かい風である。
グアナコ狩り御一行が出発。あとから一緒について行かせてもらえばよかったと死ぬほど後悔したけど、あとの祭りです。チャリンコ漕ぐのに必死になっていると他のことに対するアンテナが鈍る。狩猟アンテナもっと張ってかんと。グアナコはどんな味なのかな。リャマやアルパカと同じようなかんじかな。
向かい風は案の定とてもひどくて、舗装路にも関わらず時速10kmぐらいしか出ない。
お昼を食べようと土管の側へ。チリ側のイミグレは厳しいので持ってる野菜やフルーツなどをすべて食べ尽くす。ニンニクとチーズだけポケットに隠した。風が強くて寒いのでアリックスと2人で踊っていたら車が停まった。ヒッチハイクしてしまった。お昼の前なら間違いなく喜んでお受けしていたところだけど、お昼を食べて少し元気になった我々はもう少し頑張ることにした。そこからボーダー兼アルゼンチンのイミグレまで20km。
そしてセロカスティージョの町までさらに8km。チリ側イミグレではバッグを空けられたが幸い何も取られなかった。
スーパーで買い出しをし、泊まる場所を探しているとなんと消防署に泊めてもらえることに。以前から南米では消防署に泊めてもらえるという噂をいろんなチャリダーから聞いていて、是非一度泊まってみたいと思っていたのだが、ついに念願が叶った。しかもキッチン、トイレ、マットも使わせていただいた。本当にラッキー。というかみんな本当に親切だ。きっと過酷な環境下で助け合いの精神が根付いているのだろう。
今日は久しぶりのノーパンクデーだったのでビールで乾杯！

プエルトナタレスまで60kmあまり。今日は風も穏やかで、時折追い風すら吹いちゃったりしてとてもラクだった。景色もきれい。やっぱりパンパよりも圧倒的に山や湖の景色が好きだ。というかパンパの魅力がよく分からない。
とにかくまあナタレスには12時に着いてしまった。広場の近くでお昼を食べ、Casa Liliというホステル&キャンプ場へ行くと、先日カラファテで会ったフランス人カップル、クリスチャンとパトリシアに再会。
カラファテで直しそびれた諸々をここナタレスでなんとしても直さなければいけない。フロントブレーキ、リアキャリアのダボ穴、スタンド、ペダル。もう満身創痍でござる。そんなわけで自転車屋や溶接工場に東奔西走するも、また明日の朝来てくれということになった。スーパーに行くとやたら混んでいて1時間以上並んだ。
夕飯はカレーを作り、夜にはペルーで出会ったチャリダー・マットとそのお姉さんのジェシカに会う。二人と一緒にトーレスデルパイネトレッキングに行くことになっているのだが、これが何やら今シーズンからかなりややこしいシステムになっているようで。。それについてはまた次回書きましょう。
Day 227-228 New year
海外で年を越すのは大人になってからはじめてかもしれない。日本人宿に泊まって日本人らしいお正月を迎えようかとも思ったけど、せっかくならパタゴニア流のニューイヤーも見てみたい。
今日は大晦日。泊まっていたキャンプ場のオーナーが朝から何やらおいしそうなものを仕込んでいるので覗かせてもらう。
パパジーナという料理。エンパナーダににているが、生地にジャガイモが入っているらしい。
New Year's Eve. I wanted to see how people here celebrate the new year.
The owner of the campsite was making something which smelled very good.
It is a dish called papallina, which is similar to empanadas but the dough is made with potatoes.
物欲しげな目で見つめていたら揚げたてをいただきました。ありがとうございます。めちゃくちゃ美味しかったです。ジャガイモ入りの生地はもっちり。これを年が明けた12時頃に食べるらしい。
I kept on watching and she gave me some. It was so delicious :)
キャンプ場にはたくさんのフランス人サイクリストがいて、夕飯は彼らとBBQをした。
There were many cyclists from France, and I joined them having a BBQ.
そのあと夜の街へ。もうすぐ日付が変わる、というか年が明けるというのにまだほんのり明るくて不思議な気分。
We went to the town. It feels weird that it's still light until midnight.
夜の街は驚くほど閑散としていて、ほとんどの店が閉まっていた。どうやらここでは年末年始は家で過ごすものらしい。
数少ない空いてるお店には観光客がたくさん。ビールで乾杯！
年越しの瞬間は花火が上がった。
Most of the restaurants were closed. It seems like the locals celebrate in their houses. The few restaurants which were open were packed with tourists. Fireworks at midnight.
キャンプ場に戻ると、オーナー一家が一杯どうだと誘ってくれる。眠かったけどせっかくなのでまたビールを。。
When we got back to the campsite, the owner family invited us, so I had beer again...
酔ってる様子を思いっきり盗撮されてた。笑 しかも動画で。
Someone was taking a movie of me getting drunk.
そのまま幸せ気分で眠りにつきました。
朝は起きたらとうに日は昇っていた。一年の計は元旦にあり。幸先のよいスタートです。
今日出発するか、明日にするか迷いながらキッチンに行くと子羊さんが。今夜はパタゴニア名物の羊の丸焼きだそう。その瞬間に今日出発する案は消滅しました。
準備の様子を覗かせてもらう。
The next day, I was thinking of leaving today or tomorrow, but when I saw the lamb at the kitchen, I decided to stay one more night.
It was interesting to watch how to prepare the lamb BBQ.

4-5時間かけてじっくり焼く。待ってる間に折り紙や書き初めを。
It takes 4-5 hours to cook it. We did origami and Japanese calligraphy while we waited.
アルゼンチン流のワインの飲み方。ファンタ割り。

裏返して反対側も焼く。時折塩水をかけたり、根本に炭をおいて焼きムラを調整していた。

2時すぎに焼き始めて、7時頃にようやく出来上がる。脂がのってて柔らかく、本当に羊？と思うほど臭みがない。
丸焼きをするのはクリスマスと正月の年に2回だけだそう。一週間しか間空いてないけど。
Delicious!! Very soft and not gamy at all.
They only cook this on Christmas and new year.
おいしかったなあ。 そばもおせちもお雑煮もないけど、のんびりと正月を過ごさせてもらいました。明日こそ走る！たぶん！
I had a great new year. I'll start again tomorrow! Probably!
Day 221-226 Fitz Roy and Perito Moreno
日本から56時間かけてまなちゃんがやってきたー！
My friend came all the way from Japan to join me!!

宿にチェックインしてごはんを食べてダラダラして、深夜に起きてそのまま勢いで赤フィッツロイを見に行こう！ということになった。
We went to the hostel and decided to leave early to see the Red Fitz Roy!!
そんなわけで仮眠を取って2時に起き、2:40に出発。ヘッドライトを頼りに真っ暗な道を歩く。後から来たおじさんも日本人だったが、他には誰もいない。日の出信仰は日本人だけなのかな。
We woke up and left at 2am. Walking in the dark with our head lamps.
2時間半ほど歩いて、最後の急なところへ。この時点ですでに日が昇りそうであせる。1時間かかる上りを30分で駆け上がったのだけど、一番赤く染まる時間はちょうど急斜面の裏にいたので何も見えず。。あとで聞いたところによるとてっぺんは雲がかかってたらしいけど。
We arrived at the last steep section around 5:30, and it was already starting to get light. I hurried up to try, but I was just behind the rocks on the reddest moment so we missed it. Though I heard there were clouds on the top anyway.
まあでもご来光はしっかり拝みました。
But we saw the beautiful sunrise.
頂上付近はめちゃくちゃ風が強い。頂上には何人かいたが、ワインを飲んで晩酌ならぬ朝酌をしていたら、気づいたら誰もいなくなってた。
The wind was very strong at the summit. We brought some wine and snacks to enjoy there.
雲も取れたけど背景は灰色です。
It looks gray, but it was a pretty nice weather.

いくつかの湖を経由して戻る。余力があればトーレ湖まで行こうかと思ったが、さすがに12時間以上歩いて疲れたのと天気もよくなかったのでそのまま帰ってきた。まなは途中で足を挫いてしまったし。
We were considering of doing the Lago Torre as well, but we were tired and my friend also hurt her leg so we went back.
セロトーレは雲の中
ジェラートを食べ、エンパナーダを食べ、宿に着いてからはアルゼンチンビーフのステーキを焼いて食べた。うまい。眠い。
We had ice cream, empanadas, and cooked Argentina beef steak. Yum.
翌朝は曇っていて、まなは足が痛そうなのでのんびりすることに。コンドルの丘まで行こうかと思っていたけど、ダラダラしてるうちに時間が過ぎたのでおみやげやさんを周ってバスを予約し、クラフトビールを飲んで再びエンパナーダを買う。
we had nice beer and bought empanadas again, to take it in the bus.
ちなみにここのエンパナーダがとっても美味しかった。普通は多くても3種類ぐらいしかないんだけど、ここは20種類ぐらいから選べる。ベーコンとプラムとか、ほうれん草のクリームソースとか、ハワイアンとか、変わりダネがたくさん。Che Empanadaというお店でゲバラの顔が看板になってます。
フィッツロイに後ろ髪を引かれながらバスに乗り込む。バスって早いなあ。そして快適。3時間ほどでカラファテに到着。
We left El Chalten and arrived to El Calafate. Good bye Fitz Roy!!
Tokyo 21,041km
遠くまで来たもんだ。
途中で成っていたカラファテの実を摘みまくる。地名にもなっているこの実は、「食べるとまたパタゴニアに戻ってくる」という言い伝えがあるそう。だから我々もきっと戻ってくるのだろう。
We picked many Calafate berries. There is a saying that if you eat these berries, you will come back to Patagonia.
ヒッチハイクでペリトモレノへ。親切なアメリカ人カップルが拾ってくれ、6km手前の港まで連れて行ってくれた。ここから氷河トレッキングやクルーズの船が出ているようだ。ミニトレッキングに申し込もうとしたが満員で、クルーズもお金が足りず、仕方ないので歩くことに。
だんだん氷河が近づいてくる。
We hitched a ride to Perito Moreno glaciers. A nice American couple took us to the port, which was 6km before the viewpoint. We tried to apply to the mini trek, but it was already full so we walked.

途中で寄ったレストランの窓から、遠くに見えていたと思っていた氷河がいきなり目の前にドデーンと現れてびっくり。
せっかくなので氷河を眺めながらカラファテリキュールの氷河ロックを飲む。
優雅でしょう。
We went into a restaurant and was surprised to see the glaciers right in front of the window.

迫力の大崩壊は見られなかったけど、小さい塊が落ちるだけでもゴゴゴゴゴ、という雷みたいな音がした。
We couldn't see the big collapse, but could hear sounds like lightning even when only small ice fell.
クリスマスも年越しも空の上で迎えるにも関わらず、地球の裏側まで会いに来てくれた友人に心底感謝です。

そしてここにきてわたしのチャリンコはボロボロなので諸々修理し、年が明けたらまた走る。また日常に戻る。

Day 220-221 Christmas in El Chalten クリスマスイブの悲劇
12/24 Sat
コクランで釣り竿をゲットしてから、どうしても釣りがしたかったわたしは誰よりも早起きして荷物をまとめ、湖へ。しかし雨が強くなってくるし、糸はからまるし、やっぱりわたし釣りに縁がないのだなあと思っていたのだけど、フェリーが来る直前になって、なんと40cmのニジマスが釣れた！！わーい！！
I really wanted to fish ever since I got a fishing pole in Cochrane, so I woke up early, packed my stuff and went to the lake. The rain became strong, the line got tangled, and I thought I have no luck in fishing. But I finally got a 40cm trout just before the ferry arrived!! Yay!!
リオベイカーでわたしに釣りを教えてくれたライダー・フーゴにもらったルアーのおかげです！ありがとう！！
フェリーが来るので慌てて内臓だけとってサイドバックに放り込む。

フェリーの中では日本人のバックパッカーあさみさんとお話しした。彼女も過酷な国境を越えて足がマメだらけだそう。
i talked with a Japanese girl in the ferry. She is backpacking and also did the hard border crossing.
対岸に着き、ここからエルチャルテンの町までは37km。未舗装だが比較的平らで走りやすい。相変わらずすごい色の川。
We arrived to the other side of the lake. It's gravel but flat and easy after the terrible road.
そしておそらく2kmぐらい進んだところだろうか、わたしはどうやらまた転んでしまったようだ。目がさめるとスロベニア人カップルがわたしの顔を覗き込んでいる。後ろにはスペイン人とコロンビア人のカップルも。
この人たちどっかで会ったような。。でも誰だっけ？
わたし「ここはどこ？わたし何してるの？」
マニア（スロベニア人の女の子）「オイギンスからエルチャルテンに向かってる途中よ。自転車に乗ってて転んだみたい。血が少し出ているけど大丈夫よ。」
わたし「エルチャルテン…チャルテン…自転車…？」
エネイダ（コロンビア人の女の子）「エルチャルテンで友達と会うんでしょ！」
わたし「ともだち…？」
After 2km, I seem that I have fell down again. When I realized, the Slovenian couple was looking in my face. Behind them, there were also the Soanish and Colombian couple.
Me "Where am I? What am I doing?"
Mania (Slovenian girl) "We're on the way to El Chalten. You fell down from your bike and hit your head. It's bleeding a bit but you will be fine."
Me "El Chalten... Chalten... Bike...?"
Eneida (Colombian girl) "You're going to meet her friend in El Chalten."
Me "friend...?"
なにか大事なことが抜けているような、でもなんだっけ…？
転倒して前後不覚になっていたわたしは、一緒に旅をしていた仲間の顔も、そもそも自分が自転車で走っていたことさえわからなくなっていた。
みんなが車を止めてくれ、わたしとわたしの自転車を積んでくれる。そしてエネイダはわたしに付き添って一緒に車に乗ってくれた。すみません、本当にありがとうございます。
I wonder what they are talking about. Everyone helped me to stop a car and asked to take me to the hospital. Eneida joined me to the hospital.
そうか。わたし自転車で走ってたんだ。徐々に記憶が戻る。車窓から見える景色はとても美しかった。エネイダもここを彼と走りたかったろうに。本当にごめんね、と何度も謝る。
Oh, I was biking. My memories started to come back. All the view from the car was so beautiful. I felt so sorry for Eneida because she must have wanted to bike here with her boyfriend.
エルチャルテンの診療所まで運んでくれた家族にお礼を言い、それからレントゲンを撮る。エネイダがすべて手続きをしてくれた。
医者「レントゲンでは異常はないようだけど、頭を打っているので精密検査をしたほうがいいですね。でもここにはその設備がないらしく、220km離れたエルカラファテまで行かないといけません。移動手段がないので救急車で行きましょう。」
そう告げられて、わたしは人生初の救急車で運ばれることになった。エネイダも心配だからと付いてきてくれた。イブなのに。本当にごめんね。
I thanked the family who took me all the way to the hospital in El Chalten, and took some X-rays. The doctor said there is no problem, but I need to go to El Calafate, which is 220km away, to take a CT.
幸いにもこれまで病院とか入院とは無縁で生きてきたわたしにとってはすべてが初体験でなんだかドラマを見ているようだった。点滴を打たれ、担架にのせられて救急車へ。車内の天井からハサミがぶら下がってて怖かった。
It was the first time for me to get on an ambulance, and everything was so new to me that I thought I was watching a drama. Eneida also came with me. I'm sorry to ruin her Christmas Eve...
救急車の中でふと今朝釣ったニジマスのことが頭をよぎる。
あーニジマスどうなったかな？誰か気づいてくれるといいけど。と自分の頭よりもニジマスのことが気になるわたし。
I was wondering what happened to my trout. I hope someone notices.
3時間後、到着したカラファテの病院は驚くほどきれいで、ほぼ待たされることもなくCTを撮られる。
医者１「特に問題はないけど、念のため一晩様子を見たほうがいいですね。」
しかし食べ物も着替えもないし、買い出しをするにも町からは数キロ離れているらしい。ベッドの上には布団すらないし、付き添ってくれたエネイダにはそのベッドすらないという過酷な状況。どうしようかとエネイダと相談していたところ、お医者さんが当直の関係で代わった。
医者２「帰っていいよー」
わたし「え、いいんですか？」
そんなわけで病院を脱出することができた。ちなみにすべてタダでびっくり。保険に入っているとはいえ、220kmの救急車とか一体いくら請求されるのかドキドキしていたけど、どうやらチリとアルゼンチンは医療費はタダのようだ。なんというふとっぱら。
After 3 hours, we arrived to El Calafate and took a CT. The doctor said there is no problem, but it's better to stay until the morning just in case. But we were wondering what to do because we didn't have anything to eat, and the closest place to buy food was in he town, which is few km away.
After a while, the doctor changed and the new doctor told me I can go.
So, we were released!!
病院を脱出したはいいが、すでに21時。チャルテンに戻るバスはもうない。ヒッチハイクを試みたけど、クリスマスイブの夜に220kmも移動する人はサンタさん以外いないらしい。
However, it was already 9pm, no more buses to go back to El Chalten. We tried to hitchhike, but no one will drive 220km on Christmas Eve except Santa Claus.
仕方ないのでカラファテの町で宿を探すことにした。町まで4kmほどの道を歩いているとやさしいおじさんが乗せてくれた。あなたがサンタクロースでしたか！本当にありがとうございます。サンタさんは宿を見つけるのも付き合ってくれた。 泊まるところができてホッとひと安心。
So we ended up walking to the town. On the way, a kind man offered us a ride. Thank you so much, you're my Santa Claus!! He even helped us finding a place to stay.
3日ほど米に入れていたケータイもなんと復活している！
My phone, which died few days ago with the rain and put in rice, also revived!!
疲れたけどお腹も空いたし、何か食べようかと町に出るが、イブなのでことごとく店が閉まっているようだ。
ああ、うらめしきイブ！！
どうしようかと思っていたところ、エネイダがわたしのケータイが入っていた袋を指して
「そのお米食べられるんじゃない？」と言った。
おおー！その手があったか！ケータイだけでなく我々も助けてくれるなんて、グッジョブ！米！！
しかしおかずがないなあ。白ごはんかー。と思っていたところ、
「肉食べる？」
とどこからともなく現れた青年が大きなバットに入ったラム肉をくれた。ここパタゴニア名物・羊の丸焼き。
宿の人からコーラももらってなかなか豪華な夕飯に。
ありがとうイブ！
そして本当にありがとう、エネイダ！！
We wanted to eat something, but all the stores were closed on Christmas Eve. Oh Jesus...
but it we realized we have rice! The rice saved my phone, and also ourselves!
Than a boy showed up with a batch of baked lamb. It was the leftover from Patagonian lamb BBQ!!

12/25 Sun
朝いちでバスターミナルに行くが、日曜だしクリスマスだしでバスの本数が少ないらしく、次のバスは午後だという。
とりあえずヒッチハイクを試みる。30分したところでなんとバスが捕まった。エルチャルテンまでなぜか空っぽで向かっているよう。運転手のおっちゃんはとってもやさしくてマテ茶をふるまってくれた。
We went to the bus terminal in the morning but no buses until afternoon, so we decided to hitchhike again.
After 30minutes, we were lucky to have an empty bus taking us. The driver was very kind and he offered us mate.
3時間後にチャルテンに到着。みんなが止まっているコテージへ。ラファ（エネイダの彼）にごめんね、と言うと「無事でいてくれたことが何よりだよ」と言ってくれて泣きそうになった。暖かい部屋、おいしいごはん、やさしい仲間。あー生きててよかった。
ちなみにニジマスはちゃんとラファが発掘して冷蔵庫にしまっておいてくれた。
気が効きますなあ。本当にありがとう！
3 hours later, we finally got back to El Chalten. We went to the cottage everyone else was staying. I said sorry to Rafa, Eneida's boyfriend, and he said "The most important thing is that you're ok". I almost cried.
Rafa also saved my trout in the fridge. What a nice guy!
今日はクリスマスだからみんなでパーティーをしようということになった。
買い出しをして、料理をして、国境越え仲間も呼んでみんなで食べて飲んで。
チャリダー9人食べる食べる。
国も言葉もバラバラだけど、自転車という共通言語は何にも増して強い。2時間おきに食べないともたないとか、こんなに走ってるのに一向に痩せないどころか増量してるとか、チャリダーあるあるで盛り上がった。
わたし以外カップルという悲しい状況には目をつむってください。
We threw a Christmas party! Invited other cyclists as well. It was funny to talk about how much we eat everyday.

アメリカ人カップルはここで旅を終えるというので、「クリスマスプレゼントだよー」、とヘルメットをくれた。わーい！わたしのヘルメットはもう割れてしまったので。3度も命を守ってくれてありがとうベル。合掌。
The American couple finishes their trip here, and they gave me their helmet for a Christmas gift. My helmet was cracked with falling down many times. Thank you for saving my life, bell!
こうして今日も生きていて、最高の仲間と最高のクリスマスを迎えられたことが最大のプレゼントです。もう感謝しかありません。
I'm so thankful that I'm alive and I coul spend a wonderful Christmas with wonderful friends. This is my best Christmas gift.
明日は日本から来てくれる友人と合流する予定！たのしみだー！

Day 219-220 The most beautiful and challenging border crossing in the world
アウストラル街道の終着点オイギンスからアルゼンチンへ抜ける道は「世界一美しくて過酷な国境越え」と言われている。車道はないので徒歩か自転車か馬でしか通れないが、この難関を制した者だけに許された特権・裏フィッツロイが見られるらしい。過去のチャリダーのブログや北に向かう人たちの情報からかなり過酷な道のりになることは覚悟していた。
The way from Villa O'Higgins to Argentina is called "The most beautiful and challenging border crossing in the world". Only hiking, biking, or horse back riding is the way to go through, but you can see the Fitz Roy from the other side. According to othe people's blogs and information from the people heading north, I knew that it would be tough.

オイギンスは小さいけどかわいらしい町である。
Villa O'Higgins is a cute little town.
町の図書館にはパソコンも4台あり、無料でインターネットが使える。iPhoneがお逝きになったので足繁く図書館に通う。
The library has 4 PCs that you can use for free. I went often because my iPhone died.
久しぶりに晴れたので濡れたものを乾かしたり荷物を整理したり。
国境越えは1gでも軽い方がいいというアドバイスを受けて、溜め込んでいた食料をここぞとばかりに調理し、張り切って明日のお弁当まで作る。他の人は買い込んでたけど。
夕方フェリー会社でチケット購入。オイギンスから国境を越えには２つの湖を渡らなければいけないのだが、チリ側の湖は3時間で約6000円、アルゼンチン側は1時間で約4000円とビンボーチャリダーにはなかなか厳しいお値段。世界一美しくて過酷、かつexpensiveな国境越え。明日はいよいよ決戦の日！
We bought a ticket for the ferry. We need to cross two lakes, but I t is pretty much expencive for a low budget cyclist. The first lake costs $60, and the second is $40.

いい天気になると聞いていたのに水の音で目がさめる。えー雨か。。テンションが下がるが外に出ると思っていたほどひどくはない。オイギンスの町からフェリー乗り場まで7km。いちばん早く準備を始めたのに、荷物を積んでる間にみんな気付いたら出発してて結局最後になってしまった。相変わらずのろまです。
We expected good weather but I woke up with the sound of rain. It wasn't so bad though. I started packing early, but when I realized, everyone else had already left...
フェリー乗り場までの道のりはさながらレースのように15人以上のチャリダーが抜きつ抜かれつ。
ここがアウストラル街道の終着点。
7km to the ferry terminal. The end of Carretera Austral.
フェリーに乗り込む。
対岸まで3時間。だんだん晴れてきた。
3 hours to the other side. The weather got better.
対岸に到着。
Arrived to the other side.
チリ側イミグレまで約2km。なかなかキツイ坂だけど男性陣が先回りして自転車を置いて押すのを手伝ってくれたりして助かった。
景色は最高。
2km to the Chikean immigration. It was steep but the boys helped pushing the bike which was very helpful. The view is great.
頼もしい仲間たち
アルゼンチンとの国境で遅めの昼食。デシエルト湖のフェリーは17時か翌11時なのだが、この時点ですでに14:30だった。
Late lunch at the border. The ferry from Lago Desierto leaves at 5pm or 11am, but it was already 2:30pm.
そしてアルゼンチンに入った瞬間からひどい道になる。まず幅が人ひとりギリギリ通れるぐらいまで狭くなり、連日の雨のせいか道が川のようになっている。
The path gets crazy as soon as you get to the Argentinean side. It gets narrow that one person can barely pass, and the paths all turned into rivers.
後半になるとさらにひどくなり、膝上まである川や、パニアをつけたままでは通れない幅の道、というかもう道とも認めたくないぐらいの悪路続きに思わず笑ってしまった。アルゼンチンはよっぽどチャリダーに恨みがあるのでしょう。
The latter half was even worse, with rivers up to the knees, and extremely narrow paths that are impossible to pass without taking off your panniers. I guess Argentineans hate cyclists.
ここでもやはりブレーキが効かないのはかなりの痛手で、道からあえて外れたり、茂みの中に突っ込んだりしてやっと暴走を止める。早くブレーキ直したい。
It was even harder with my broken brakes, and I had to drive into the bush to stop my bike. I really want to fix my brakes...
そしてついに見えました、デシエルト湖と裏フィッツロイが！！

どうにかしてたどり着いた湖のほとりで本日はキャンプです。絶景！！
We camped in front of the lake. Beautiful!!
すごく大変だったけど、あの孤独で過酷な宝石の道を思えば、こんなのは序の口で、仲間の存在の大きさを感じた。荷物を運ぶのを手伝ってくれたり、後ろから押してくれたり、何よりもひとりじゃなくてみんなで乗り越えている、というのが精神的に大きかった。仲間ってすごい。
It was very tough, but not as much as the Laguna route, because I had friends to cooperate. I really really appreciate all their help both physically and mentally.
大きな山場を越えた、とこの時は思っていました。。
I thought we achieved a big goal, until this point...
Day 216-218 Tortel to O'Higgins
暴走チャリと夏のパンク祭り
12/19 Mon
朝ブレーキの点検をすると前も後ろも調子が良くない。あれこれいじってみたけど良くならず、同じ宿のチャリダー達に助けを求めるが結局だめ。みんなが9時過ぎに出発する中、わたしはまたもや遅れて10時に。
今日はトルテルから40kmちょっとあるユンガイのフェリー乗り場まで行き、対岸のリオブラボーまで渡る予定。前半20kmは平らだが、後半20kmは大きな峠を越えねばならない。
I checked my brakes but neither of them worked well. i asked help for the other cyclists, but no one could figure it out... Everyone else left at 9, but I kept on working on it and left at 10.
I'm going to take a ferry from Yungay, which is 40km away. The first half is pretty flat, but the last half has a big hill.
キツイ登りを登りきったところで、やはりブレーキが効かないのでブレーキパッドを交換する。そしてしばらくすると今度は前輪がパンク。昨日チューブを補修し忘れたために予備がなく、パッチを貼ろうとしたが雨で濡れてうまく貼れず、仕方ないので押すことにした。フェリー乗り場まで残り8km。最終のフェリーまであと2時間。間に合うかしら。
After the steep climbing, I changed my brake pads. In a while, my front tire had a flat. I forgot to repair the tube and I didn't had a spare so I needed to patch it, but it wouldn't work with the heavy rain, and I had to push my bike. 8km to the ferry terminal, 2 hours for the last ferry...
せっかくの大好物の下り坂なのに乗れず、荷物満載のヘビー級チャリは下り坂では押すというよりも転がらないように抑えるのが大変で、おまけにブレーキも効かないため、足でブレーキをしようとするが、ズザザザザーッとほとんどチャリに引きずられるようにして進む。傾斜もカーブもきつく、何度かガードレールに激突しそうになり、「ギャーー止まってー！！止まれーー！！」
と奇声を発しながら下った。せっかく乾かした服も靴も汗だか雨だかわからないけどびしょびしょになり、暴走パンクチャリを抑えるのに疲れてついに乗ってしまった。。これが大失敗。チューブを穴だらけにしてしまった上に、しまいには走っている途中にタイヤがホイールから外れた。ホイールが壊れなくてよかったけどめちゃくちゃ怖かった。。
I usually love downhills, but it was so hard to try to STOP my full loaded heavy bike going down with my broken brakes, so I had to brake with my feet, and I was rather dragged by my bike. The hill was also steep, with many curves, and I almost crushed into the barrier. "STOP!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!" I was screaming. All my clothes and shoes were soaking wet with sweat and rain, and I was so tired that I ended up riding my bike... which was NOT a good idea. I made so many extra holes in my tube, and my tire eventually came off the wheel...!!! I'm glad that the wheel didn't brake, but it was so scary...
どうにか18:00の最終フェリーに間に合い、身も心もボロボロだったけど、フェリーの船員さんたちがとてつもなくやさしくて、ブレーキを直そうとしてくれたうえに、寒くて震えるわたしに温かいお茶とシチューとパンを食べさせてくれ、お土産にフルーツまで持たせてくれた。感激。おかげでわたしの冷え切った心と体はぽっかぽかになりました。
I made it to the 6pm ferry, and I was so worn out and shiverring, but the sailors on the ferry were so nice that they helped me fixing the brakes, gave me some hot tea, and even invited me for a hot dinner. They also gave me some bread and fruits for the next day. I felt so thankful and warmed up my body and soul. By the time I got off the ferry, I had a big smile on my face.
対岸の待合室に着くと自転車が5台。先のフェリーで着いていたみんなが出迎えてくれた。みんなわたしがなかなか出てこないのできっと最終便に間に合わなかったのだろうと思っていたらしい。すみません、ごはん食べてました。てへ
ピットインしたレーシングカーよろしく、わたしの穴だらけのチューブやブレーキを直してくれる。本当にありがたい。
ついていないと思っていたこんな日ですら、こうしてみんなに助けられてわたしは今日も生きている。本当にありがとう。
When I reached the other side, there were 5 bikes in front of the waiting room, and everyone welcomed me. They were thinking that I couldn't make it because I didn't come out from the ferry. Sorry, I was eating dinner.
The boys started to fix my bike like an pit-in racing car. Even on an unlucky day like today, I feel so thankful for everyone helping me out.

最近の日課はパンク修理です、というぐらい毎日パンクしている。朝みんなが出発したあとにも黙々とチューブを直す。結局昨日のチューブには11個の穴が空いていた。よい子はパンクしたチャリに乗ってはダメ、ゼッタイ。
My recent daily routine is to repair flats. There was 11 holes in my tube yesterday. NEVER ride bikes on flats.
昨日の調子だともうリタイアかと思っていたけど、いろいろいじってみたら奇跡的になんとか乗れる状態に復活したので行けるところまで行ってみることにする。自転車に乗れるっていうことがこんなに嬉しいなんて。
はじめの15kmは比較的平坦で、そこから峠が3つ。その2つ目の峠の下りでまたもや後輪がパンク。修理しているとまた雨が激しくなってきた。
I was thinking it might be impossible to bike further, but I made it functioning again. I never felt so happy that I can ride my bike.
The first 15km was flat, and three hills afterwards. I got a flat again on the second hill. Raining hard. I was glad I had a spare tube this time.

途中で橋があり、その下でキャンプしようかと考えたが、なんか湿ってるしやめようと思い、激しい坂を登っているうちに雨が強くなってきて、あーやっぱりさっきのところにすればよかったと後悔。でもそのうち雨も上がり、坂を下ると湖と氷河が見えて、さらには虹が出てきて、あまりの美しさに涙が出た。なんだかここ数日の壮絶な日々がすべて報われた気がした。
I found a bridge and was wondering whether to camp there, but carried on, and then came a steep hill and strong rain so I regretted that I didn't stop. But the rain stopped soon and after going down hill, lakes glaciers, and even a rainbow came up. It was so beautiful that I felt all of the last hard days had been rewarded.
そのさらに数キロ先のおうちの納屋みたいなところにキャンプさせてもらうことにした。これって不法侵入ですかね。いや、本当は家主に聞こうと思ったのだけど、数時間待っても家主は帰ってこなかったので。。しばらくするとスイス人チャリダーもやってきた。彼は逆方向なのでいろいろと情報交換。どうやらオイギンスのフェリーは悪天候でよく運休になるらしく、彼は一週間待ったらしい。わたしは訳あってどうしても23日のフェリーに乗らないといけないのだが、もし乗れない場合は元来た道を戻り、850kmヒッチハイクしなければいけないことになる。そして連日の雨で川が増水しており、膝までの深さの川を4-5つぐらい越えないといけないらしい。不安だ。そもそもフェリーが来るのか不安だ。
夜からまた雨が強くなった。屋根があるところでよかった。けっこう雨漏りしてるけれども。
There was a refugio on the map, but I couldn't find it so I ended up under a roof close to someone's house. Anothe cyclist came. He was heading north so we exchanged some information. He told me that the ferry from Villa O'Higgins sometimes don't come due to the bad eeather, and they had to wait for a week. I have a reason that I must get on the ferry on the 23rd, or otherwise go back hitchhiking 850km to get to El Chalten. And due to the rain, you have to cross 4-5 rivers which are up to knee height.I hope I can make it. I hope the ferry comes.
The rain got very strong at midnight. I'm glad we have a roof, though it's leaking pretty much.

昨夜の雨は山の上では雪だったようで、中腹あたりまで真っ白になっていた。
オイギンスまで50km。パンクしないように慎重に走る。
The rain yesterday seemed to be snow on the top of the mountains.
50km to Villa O'Higgins. I biked carefully so that I don't get a flat.
牛も見守ってくれる。ちょっとこわい。

14:30頃にオイギンスに到着。チェックインしたホステルにはなんと20人近いチャリダーが。
I arrived in O'Higgins. 20 cyclists at the hostel.
一度にこんなにたくさんのチャリダーに会うのははじめて。ほぼみんな北に向かうようなのだが、どうやらフェリーが一週間来なかったためにたくさん人が溜まったらしい。初の日本人チャリダーにも会った。またもやいろいろと情報交換。国境越えは相当過酷なようだ。
I've never seen so many cyclists in one time. Most of them were heading north, and it was due to the ferry which didn't come for a week. I met a Japanese cyclist for the first time.
そして連日の雨でついにわたしのiPhoneがお逝きになりました。地図も走行情報もブログも写真のアップロードもすべてこれで管理してたのでとても困ります。お米に入れておくといいと聞いたので電源切ってジップロックの中に米と一緒に封印した。とてもシュール。写真とればよかった。

フェリー会社に行くと翌22日のフェリーは運休だという。あさってフェリーが出なければ850kmのヒッチハイクトリップへ。どうかどうかフェリーが来ますように！！！
The ferry tomorrow seems to be canceled. I hope it comes the next day or otherwise I need to do a 850km hitchhiking trip. Ferry por favor!!!
Day 214-215 Cochrane to Tortel
12/17 Sat
コクランからオイギンスはアウストラル街道の中でも特に雨が多いらしく、ここを濡れずに抜けられるチャリダーはほぼいないらしい。そんな中、この日だけは晴れ予報だというのでみんな貴重な晴れ間を狙って早く出発したが、わたしは早速出遅れ10時に。そして町を出ようとすると今度は羊の群れに行く手を阻まれる。
Cochrane to Villa O'Higgins is a very wet section in Carretera Austral, and its said that almost no cyclists can go through dry. Today was one of the few days that was sunny, so eveyone tried to leave early, but I was late again. And when I tried to get out of the town, a sheep herd blocked my way.
アップダウンの続く道。ようやくダウンヒルだぜ！と思った矢先にまたもやパンク。これで３度目。
Up and down. I got a flat again on the downhill.
パンク修理してたら16:30になってしまった。近くに素敵な家族がやっている農園&キャンプ場があるというのでそこに向かってみる。しかし片道10kmの遠回りだということがわかり、とても迷ったけどせっかくなので行ってみることにした。ゲートやダートに阻まれてなかなか進まない。でも景色は素晴らしい。それにしても誰も見かけないなあと思ったら、やっとの思いでたどり着いたキャンプ場にも誰もいなかった。疲れ果てたので氷河が一望できる牧場の一角に忍び込んでテントを張る。
After fixing my flat, it was 4:30pm. There seemed to be a nice farm and campsite owned by a nice family, so I tried. I hesitated when I found out it was a 20km detour, but I headed anyway. Many gates and dirt roads, but the scenery was beautiful. But I ended up finding the campsite empty. I was tired so I pitched my tent in front of the glaciers.
散歩してたら馬がついてきた。わたしが歩くと馬も進み、わたしが止まると馬も止まる。だるまさんごっこみたい。

激しい雨で3:30に目が覚め、そのまま寝付けず、びしょ濡れのテントをたたんで6:30に出発。結局素敵な家族に会えずに残念。街道まで10km戻るのが大変だった。街道に戻ってからは割と平坦だが、雨がどんどん強くなり、靴の中はプールに。この靴防水だと思ってたんだけどな。
Hard rain woke me up at 3:30am, and I couldn't go back to sleep, so I decided to leave. It was pretty hard to go back to the Carretera. The rain got stronger and my shoes got soaked. I thought these shoes were waterproof...
しばらく走ってるとまた後輪がパンク。雨の中のパンク修理に手間取り、すっかり身体が冷え切って震えていると、通りかかった車がお湯と肉をくれた。
I had a flat again. Fixing flats in the rain is hard, and I was shiverring as well. A car stopped by and gave me some hot water and meat.
しばらく走ってると変な音がするなあと思っていたら、今度は前輪のブレーキが取れた。えぇっ、、取れた、、！？
After a while, my front brake came off...
仕方ないのでしばらく後輪ブレーキだけで走っていたが、こちらも雨で濡れてるせいかあまり効かず、下り坂が怖くてたまらない。わたしから下り坂を取ったら何が残るというのですか。もう疲れ果てたのでヒッチしようと思ったけど、こんな時に限ってぜんぜん車が通らないし、通っても荷台がない車ばかり。諦めてしばらく走っていたところ一台の車が。すかさず手を上げてトルテルまで乗せていただくことができた。こんなずぶ濡れのわたくしを拾ってくれてありがとうございます。。
I was running with one brake, but my rear brake didnt work well, and it was so scary going downhill with broken brakes. I tried to hitch, but so few cars with room for me and my bike. After a while, I finally got a ride and they took me to Tortel. Thank you so much for picking a soaking wet miserable cyclist...
トルテルに着き、うろうろしていると何台か自転車を発見。数日前に会ったアルゼンチン人夫婦とスロベニア人カップルだった。幸い空室があったので早速熱いシャワー浴び、濡れたものを乾かさせてもらった。
I arrived to Tortel and was wondering around when I found few bikes in front of a hostel. They were the Argentinian couple and Slovenian couple, whom I met few days ago. I was lucky that they still had room. I recovered with a hot shower.
それから町を散策。ここトルテルは木の町。家だけでなく道の代わりに町中を木でできた遊歩道が張り巡らされている。
Tortel is a town eveything made by wood.
広場にある像から想像するに、相当大変な想いをして作られたようだ。
It seems that they had a lot if work to make this.
これだけ雨の多い場所になぜこんな滑りやすい木道を作ったのかは謎だけど、他の町とはぜんぜん違う雰囲気で楽しい。階段も多いので足腰が鍛えられそう。
しかし辺鄙なために何もかもが高い。スーパーには新鮮な野菜はなく、ここに暮らすのは大変だと思った。
冷凍ハンバーグとじゃがいもと玉ねぎを買ってみんなでごはんを作って食べた。
I dont know why they made so slippery walkways on a rainy place, but it was interesting because it's totally different from other towns. Many steps to make you fit.
However, everything is so expensive because its so rural and it's hard to find something fresh.
We cooked frozen hamburgs and french fries.

屋根があること、壁があること、おいしいごはん、ふかふかのベッド、そして愉快な仲間たち。ひとりでチャリに乗ってると当たり前のことがありがたく感じる。ありがてえありがてえ。
Biking alone makes me appreciate many things... I have a roof, a wall, good food, nice bed, and great friends.
